Hahaha, I just found you guys and I can't believe this forum exists! :-)

Now almost a year ago I stumbled upon a Mac Classic II at a secondhandshop for 10 euro and I couldn't resist it. I bought it, googled hours for information, especially for how to make a serial cable between the Mac and a pc(...) I thought it would be cool to have a Compact Mac as a terminal on a linuxbox. I have very fond memories of compact macs, when I was around 8 years old, an uncle of mine had a small startup advertising agency(hey! it was the eighties) and whenever I was there he let me 'play' with a Compact Mac. I 'owned' a commodore C=16 at the time (woohoo!). Anyway, last year I came across this Classic II, bought it and it took me months before I had it up&running the way I wanted. (PC-apps to image Mac-floppies, getting decent images for system 6.0.8 and getting a scheme for a serial cable). In the end I succeeded and since then I'm on the Classic as much if not more then on my Athlon :-). A little while later I saw an ad for a Mac SE, to be picked up for free along with an ImageWriter. I picked it up of course :-) In the mean time I visited this store in my town where people can bring stuff for free and they sell it for a good cause. They have these crates full of cables and stuff and in a few months time I got every strange cable, connector, small scsi-disks, scsi-cdromplayers and sometimes complete systems for little to no money. That store is my main source for obsolete hardware and I visit them once a week if I have the time.

Not too long ago I saw another ad of Macs to be picked up for free and so I found myself transporting 3 macs at once on my bicycle (a LC, a LC475 and a ...Performa 6320). After some research I decided the LC475 would be my first project. I chipped it with a 33mhz 'real' 68040 and I put a 1gb disk in there and I installed NetBSD on it. Only problem is that I don't have a LC-PDS ethernetcard in there now that's recognized by NetBSD. My main plan is to have it running as a 'server'. I tried to install A/UX on it, but I couldn't get the installer to continue it's installation(I couldnt find info on anyone succeeding in running it on a LC475). After seeing screenshots on 'fritter I was totally obsessed with this 'Apple Unix' and I still want to have it running. Now yesterday I got this Quadra 800 for 5 euro and now I think I have the hardware for A/UX. Of all the Macs I use my ClassicII the most, I bought this Asante EN/SC ethernet-box for it and it's running fine! I telnet to my webserver(non-Mac... also non-PC, it's an old SGI running Irix 6.5) with it (which is running in my apartment also, on a cablemodem) and from there I can check my mail, chat with irc, ftp etc... what does anyone wnat to do more? Well, my plans for the coming days are to get this Quadra 800 running on A/UX, I got all the stuff to make it work, I also got an Asante AAUI->UTP-transceiver, so I can get it online if I succeed :-)

Another project of mine is a Mac SE-mod.(those of you who think I'm completely out of my mind, I can understand, I have thought very long before I took this step and this way it gets a prominent place in my livingroom, instead of rusting away in the closet). It was a dented case already and I didn't have any use for it, so I decided to take it apart. I painted it black last weekend and I got all the hardware out of the case. Now my idea is the following, on computertrades here in Holland they sell these 9" 800x600 VGA-monitors. I'm gonna buy one of those and try to fit it in the Mac SE-case and use it as a monitor on a Duron 900 with 512mb DDR in my livingroom. I played with X-windows on NetBSD before and there are some very good system 6 look-a-likes, so on first sight it will look like a very(very!!!) fast Mac SE running System 6, capable of playing MP3/DivX and capturing live TV :o

Well, this is a very long introduction, but well, I'm enthusiastic about this forum and still can't believe it exists (at the goodies-section the 'He who dies with the most macs wins' cracked me up really good!)

Greetings from Holland and the existence of this forum already made my day!

Mark

Welcome to the 68kMLA! I really like your wonderful "experimental" website. You have the best 404 error page that I have seen in a long time. I also liked all the pictures, especially the insides of the Vax. I hope you continue to rescue old Macs and other old computers and have fun with them. Good luck with all your computer projects.

DUH!

NT is one of the greatest X86 operating systems of all time...

Until Apple releases OSX for intel and it'll work on hoardes of old Pentium 200s and quad-proc pentium pros... (yeah... that'd be nice) I'm stickin to NT!

That Challenge S is a good box. I have a Indy which is the same as your Challenge but it has a video card. What hard do you have in the Challenge? The drive died in my Indy last year and it is really picky about drives.

Cory: Maybe there's an emulator for your PC or Mac that'll emulate an SGI? iDunno.

Well, thank you all for the warm welcome! :-)

Some answers, the SGI I have, I bought it of an auctionsite for 94 euro. Overhere there are almost always a couple for sale... And I thought it would be cool to have a SGI called 'Challenge' since that's the name of their past serverrange :-) (This being the smallest of the lot, I couldnt afford the energybill on the bigger ones, even if I would've found one). Next to that, I thought it would be cheaper if I bid on a box that only has a serial connection to it, cause there are less people interested that way. The guy I bought it from never even hook up a terminal to it... He thought the printerport was some kind of fancy monitorconnector :-) Anyway, I use my Classic II as a direct terminal on it and I configured Irix completely on my Classic II on it :-) Mine has a 180mhz R5000SC with 512kb cache and 64mb RAM, which is pretty nice. If one of you ever plans to buy one, make sure they have the memory already, cause for an extra 64mb on this machine I would need to pay more than I paid for the SGI as a whole! My harddrive is the original 2.1GB IBM-drive and I didn't try (or have experience with) other drives hooked up to it. With all the luck in the world I managed to get myself the original copy of Irix, and a very recent set also, 6.5.18 (nov.2002) :-)

Well, I have a little love/hate-relationship with the VAX, it works, it boots, I have a transceiver to connect it to a network etc. But I don't have a proper idea of what to do with it. So maybe I'll leave it for now and maybe some day I'll look into getting OpenVMS running on this box.

Hmmmz, well, but my coming project is getting this Quadra 800 to work as a A/UX-server :-) I just want to have a machine in my network, saying it's an Apple when I telnet to it :-) Next to that I use my Classic II (along with the Asante EN/SC) as my main IRC-machine and now I telnet to the SGI, which already is a pretty exotic setup but I want to join IRC on an A/UX-machine with the Classic II as the terminal :-)

About my 'website', well I host it on my cablemodem and now I have the SGI running, but I don't want to just transfer the page to the 'new' webserver. I planned to make a new site as well, but I haven't found the time to do it yet. So in the meantime it runs of my OpenBSD router/firewall and only a 'testpage' runs on my SGI, on http://mark.is-a-geek.org:81/ My idea is/was to have a LC475 running to host especially Mac-Stuff (also the name of my LAN, macstuff.local) so we'll see about that.

Greetings for now!

Mark

cool... I'm not sure about the power supplies in the other ones but I'm not sure if they have just physically bigger or if they actually take more power..

You'll be happy with the quadra 800 as an A/UX server... it'll be olderiffic but it's cool...

Why don't we keep things civil where Applefritter is concerned. Its a free country and different forums have a rigth to instill different policies -- Applefritter has its code of behavior and the 68kMLA has its. Moreover, a bunch of people are members, readers, and contributors to both places, so any rants will only create ill-will that diminishes both places.

Peace,

...well I sold that Sparc to a friend of mine. That machine was my first 'serious' Unixmachine other than the usual x86-stuff and did start off me buying a whole lot of other equipment since, but well I don't want to get too emotional about a machine, that friend of mine had better use for it then I had so he could buy it from me :-) I do have a plan to buy a Sparcstatuion 5/170mhz, that seems to be a pretty good machine.

I bought the SGI to be a faster and 'more serious' webserver, also capable of some serverside generated stuff, but well my ideas about the 'ideal setup' change often :-) Anyway, in this thread I was asked what drive I have in the SGI and guess what? The drive died this week! Well, next week(25th) there's a computertrade nearby my town and I hope to pick up a 9" monitor for my SE-case and also a SCSI-disk (prolly 4.3gb).

I've been busy with the Quadra but I first cleaned it out thoroughly, I even put the case under the shower! :-) Anyway, it looks fresh now and I've been busy to install A/UX on it, but to no effect till now. I will give it another try anytime soon.

Sorry to hear about the drive. Those SGI boxes are very picky about there drives. I have found that if it requires an adapter to hook it up forget it. Also if you try a drive and it does not work, mess with the jumpers. Usally I find that ultra negoation has to be disabled.

The only good part about a dead hard drive is those insanely strong magnets, unless it is a very old drive that uses a rotary voice coil. Those work good as shotgun targets

yeah... I don't like it when me HDDs die either...

cats: bad sectors is when part of a hard drive "expires" or something....

you know what sectors and tracks of a hard drive are right?

well when one goes bad that's what happens.....
