Hi, I bought a Powerbook 140 a while ago but it came busted. I later found out it was actually a powerbook 170 in a 140 case. Now I really jimmied the internal video cable, I have a post around here somewhere. I might be able to pick up a PB 180 and try to repair my 170. The seller says it's just for parts. I looked it up on everymac.com and it's says the PB 180 is the same form factor as the 140 and 170. I've also read the 180 had a grayscale screen and not a b/w screen. If I can't get the 180 to work, could I just take the keyboard and monitor off the 180 and put in on the 170? Thanks! yes you can.... this is just like swapping parts in an LC.... IIRC the PB150 and the PB100 and the PB190 are teh only 3 of the 1x0 that aren't completely interchangable.Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide "I'm just a normal computer geek who somehow landed a social life"

You might want to ask the seller about which "parts" are good on that 180. It would be a shame to get the 180 only to find that it is broken in the same way as your "155" = (140+170)/2.G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent

Probably not. Although the 180 is designed similarly to the 170, all the connectors around the display/inverter/interconnect board are all completely different. However, it's been a while since I've seen a 180. That's how it is on the 180c, though.-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

I'd like to double check that but the manual wasn't available for download from the link on GAMBA. I downloaded a manual from apple about the 180 but it was just the beginners manual nothing with logic board diagrams.Would there be manuals on any hotline servers? it's looking good, (thanks for the link!), the connectors are in the same place on the 140/170/180, and oddly enough the manual for the 180c says it's in the same place as well. Hopefully I can get the 180 working, if if not I'll get the 170 up and running. Thanks. Zero on the upgrade. The 180 is completely dead and made a faint noise when attached to the power adapter. The bottom half and monitor top half line up on both machines but the connections are different!. The top half monitor connection is larger on the 180. So I though he why don't I just replace the 180 (Daughter?) board and put it on the 170. Nope this time the 180 connection is smaller. So I took apart the actually screen just to see if I can replace the broken cable. Once again the 180 cable is way smaller is and the 170 cable wraps along the back of the screen. So I had a "Hail Mary" idea, I'll cut off the injured part of the cable and grafted on the 180's smaller cable/ribbon thing. I scraped off the plastic part of the ribbon with an X-Acto knife and tape the piece together. It wasn't pretty but I was desperate. I tested it out, the screen obviously turned on but the screen was completly black. So now I'm back to square one. And asking for help, does any one have that f..... cable/ribbon?!. I can trade some off the innards of the 180. It has the 33mhz 68030 processor and supposedly 12mb of ram. I don't think I can run that ram in mine.
