can i use one on my performa? i have and old one laying around some place and thought that might be cool to tranfer files to and from my X machine?

Yes, you should be able to make it work. You might need some drivers to make the drive automatically mount disks when they are inserted. Otherwise, if you turn the drive on before turning the mac on and then insert a zip disk in the drive and then turn on the Mac,the disk should be mounted. You could also use any of a number of SCSI disk tool type apps that will mount removeable drives.

The "old" Zip software Iomega provides isn't very compatible beyond the Zip driver extension. All of the special utilties that are installed along side it won't even launch.
It works, though. I use a SCSI Zip 100 on my 630 and its fine for quickly shuttling files from my iMac while I try to find a CommSlot ethernet card.
