Well I went to the sidewalk sale this weekend and scored a few things. The main thing was a NeXT station with laser printer. No KB, Mouse or monitor though. But I only paid $15 for it. I think that is a mono NeXTstation so I guess that I will need to find the KB mouse and monitor before I could use it.I also scored a Apple 600e external cd-rom for $2 2 Advansys PCMCIA scsi cards with no cable or casing for $.50 each --Why I dont know, I think it had something do with the fact that it was 3 in the morning A 5 device LVD SCSI cable with terminator for $2. It is a really good one that has the wires twisted in pairs. |

Great deal! I think you will need the sound box also on that NeXT Slab. Mine's a turbo color and it has it. My Cube is mono and doesn't need the sound box. Was the laser printer the NeXT version?emaq123 SE/30 and system 6.0.8 Now we're talking POWER! |

Yes it is a next laser printer also.I dont know if a sound box will work with this system, since it is a mono(I think). I hope that it would becuase I dont really need another monitor on my desk. I do have a set of next manuals that I saved from the dumpster at school. So after my finals are over I am going to read though them and see what I can find out. Congratulations! Check the NeXT Hotline server (search on tracker-tracker) for an image of NeXTSTEP 3.3, the version that will run best on your machine. It's legal to have if you own the machine - Apple used to give you a free update to 3.3 for Y2K compatibility on black hardware. There is page layout software available. Very good software, in fact. I know there's Illustrator and several others, but I have no idea where to get them. I'd check eBay. I looked on tracker-tracker and the only server I could find with NeXT stuff would not let me download. Oh well I'll mess with it later. I have done some reading on NeXTstep and it looks really cool. I hope to get a copy of Openstep or a later NeXTstep that will run on Intel that way I can play with it before I get all of the bits for my slab. I'll be finished with my finals on Wensday so on Thursday I plan on runing up to a surplus store on the other side of town. Hopefully they have a monitor mouse and keyboard. Also does anyone know if NeXT made a external CD-ROM for the slab or should I plan on painting my external Plextor black? I know that there are black CDroms out there but I don't know if A) NeXT made them and/or B) they're the same kind of SCSI as NeXT is.....Painting things is cool until you canget 'an original' or you could print little stickers with the NeXT logo and all tht on them to paint an external black... Write them for access - they're really nice people. OS 4.2 is on the 68kMLA hotline server in the Uploads directory. I suggest it for Intel. NeXT did make a CD-ROM, but it's not worth what you'll pay for it. Any of the old Apple SCSI CD-ROMs will work with an adapter. Dont know yet. I think I am mostly going to use it to do software hacking on. NeXTstep should be a good system to learn Object Oreneted concepts on. That set of NeXT development manuals I found at school should come in real handy. Plus it is COOL. Life is like Jeopardy you have all the answers, you just need the questions. |
