I didn't like that clip too much... not the other assistants either...

When we first got Office, the little animated Mac help character was cute for about half an hour (we liked how it would whistle, sit glummly, or rubik cube itself when bored). But, in reality, the thing was a useless annoyance that seldom provided any help. (My favorite was when it would put up its little "I hav a suggestion" lightbulb, but that say it had no suggestions when you clicked on it.). And waiting for it to launch and go away was a pain.

I fixed the office assistant problem back in 1993 when we got my first Mac, the LCIII.

Solution to annoying Office Assitant (which didn't even exist back then):

ClarisWorks 2.0.

Even with OS X i still run AW5 on the iMac, and i would never consider running another productivity package on there, unless Apple introduces an "iWrite" word processor, "iSheet" spreadsheet, and "iBase" database program.

I don't use Office by choice. I prefer Fullwrite Professional for word stuff and Trapeze for number-stuff. Unfortunately, our stupid clients all use M$ bloatware, so we have to use it too.

I've never to seriously use Office. As such I have many options and can use several suites that have "good enough" Office compatability. Have you ever tried supporting your clients by using an Office compatible suite?

Just asking?

Appleworks 6 has pretty good MS Office compatibility, obviously it has problems if you have macros in your spreadsheets and link to other documents.

What I find amusing is that in a recent bout of unemploydness I signed up with an agency (incidentally temping and working for an agency is one of the most awful ways of making money, i could go on about how much i hate agencies but I wont!), anywho I was required to complete some tests using MS Apps, I haven't used MS for more than 10 mins in the last 4 or 5 years and even then when I did it was only for the purposes of teaching, despite this i got between 90-100% in the advanced office tests! yet more proof of how crap and useless temps are...

I use OpenOffice sometimes but I like Office:Mac for the most part and want to have it one day.... I'm about 200 MB the way there because M$ doesn't deserve any of my money until they produce a macintosh version of Train Simulator... and they produce it under the name "Cory's Train Simulator"

We tried using translators (MacLink, I think?) at first, but the quality/stability was poor. Plus, we still needed an actual copy of Office to check that each document we sent was OK in the official M$ version of office. As much as we hate Office, it was more convenient to use it. Later this year we might go through a round of upgrading our computers and might look at OpenOffice. OpenOffice's open-source model looks interesting because then we could write our own add-on modules or correct deficiencies in the source code.

Got any other suggested favorites?
