Does anyone remember the CDi and 3D0 console devices that companies like Phillips and (i think) Sony were selling back in the mid '90s? Has anyone ever used one? How good are they? How much are they worth?Just wonderin..... -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

I sold a 1st generation CDi player on ebay for about $100 US a few months ago. I got it with a batch of disks. I played one of the greenbook disks and was stuned at the quality. It was fantastic! I would guess somewhere between CED and Laserdisk.emaq123 SE/30 and system 6.0.8 Now we're talking POWER! |

Well, I can't say much about the CD-i platform, as I've never played with it very much, but I do have a schweeet 3DO system! I got it as an x-mas present a couple of years ago, when I worked at a local videogame store- it'd been sitting around for months, and my bosses knew it'd probably never sell, so they bundled it with all the games they could find and gave it to me! Nice. The 3DO was, like so many cool gizmos, far ahead of its time. Rarely has a consumer-oriented device attempted so much - gaming, movies, education/edutainment, music, computer-like functions, and other stuff I can't think of right now... As far as system design goes, it had some really neat design touches- like headphone jacks on each controller, and a really cool lightshow that activated when a audio-CD was played in the system (although nowhere near as cool as the lightshow that the later JaguarCD unit offered - the JagCD may not have been the greated gaming platform ever, but it's still highly sought after by DJ's, just for it's awesome visual effects- something along the lines of iTunes "Visuals"). One little-known fact is that the 3DO is the only system to have significant support from "Adult Content" providers - meaning there were dozens of porn titles for the system! AFAIK, most were super-low-budget soft-core titles, featuring recycled full-motion-video clips from older VHS porn tapes, linked together by an extremely thin 'plot'. Fun for the whole family! Also, if you're interested, there's an amazing, many-year-long saga of the never-released sucessor to the 3DO - the M2. I'm sure if you poke around on Google, you'll turn up some info on this highly interesting story... Have fun! SpaceBoyOfficial MLA Raconteur AppleBASIC FOREVER! iRemember using the CDi a really long time ago when it was new at Stereo Systems B4 they went out of business. All it had was the golf game, but I remember that it was like almost nothing that had come out before. I don't remember the resolution, as it's been so long, but I think it was somewhere along the lines of MS golf only maybe a little better? Then it had a funny controller like a thumb joystick or hand-held trackball or somehthing and a mouse cursor. It was certainly one of those "defining moments" for me. Sort of like the first time I played Classic NES. I didn't even know that there were successors to the original CDi! Just how many generations of the system were there? |

I had a sweet Goldstar 3DO system (went with Golstar to get the MPEG-1 card, but never ended up getting that). The games were some of the best ever played by me @ the time, definately ahead of it's time. I had a porn title for it too called "Love Bites" which was a bad hash of goth-y chicks showing their boobies to some bad Industrial music interspliced with clips from Nosferatu. In the end I eBayed it last year and got $260 for: system 5 controllers (2 boxed sealed) light gun (where the money is) 35 gamesI was pretty happy with this amount as I'd hoped for $40.

I have the Panasonic (Matsushita) FZ-1 model (the trayloader) and it kicks ass. I love the games that were made for it, mainly Killing Time, and Star Control 2. Creative Labs made an ISA card called the 3DO blaster, which was basically a 3DO on a card. The system allows you to daisychain eight controllers/lightguns/steeringwheels/joysticks to have up to eight players. So far, the only game that I have seen that supports all eight players is Twisted, The Game Show. anyway, I love my 3DO, and since we are on the subject, I am willing to purchase any parts/games for the 3DO that are found. Look out for the FZ1 MPEG module for me, (not the FZ10, different model) the 3DO is the best gaming system in the world, no contest :) CCC Commander Promotion: 19 Mar 2003 13:06:30 68k Macs Rescued: 2 Pluses, a 512KE, a Classic II, a Q650, a Q660AV, an SE/30, and a MacII Contraband rescued: Power Computing PowerBase 200, a PM 8600/300, and a PM8500/180 Apple //s rescued: Apple //e |

You know those games had no type of copyprotection on them, right? What you do with that information is not my business, though.
