I guess it is about time i intro myself to the MLA public. I simply am, The Penguin. Honored to serve among the intelligence and comradeship found here, I jioned to contribute my experience with macs. I acept the rules here and hope to have a welcome living. Sorry for the delay in 'proccedure' but I have been busy with the Hotline and have not thoroughly read all doctrines to this page and its followings. I now offer you fully with my pledge to serve the mighty 68k.

~The Penguin

P.S. - Now for one quick question that i still ahevnt understood yet. What is up with the 'sticks' that some people have? Where do i get/buy one?? Huh? Hehe ok that is all. Thank you for your time.

P.S.S. - Sorry bout my spelling also

The Sticks of Justice belong to us admins only! We use them to beat you common members into submission. There was once talk of other items of justice, like ropes and brooms and egg beaters, but they all turned out to be hoaxes.

But uh, glad to have you on the boards!

I've been putting this off for a while too: Hi. My name is Wonko The Sane. My sig says that I am an "Engineer in training" because I'm still trying to learn as much about Unix, programming, and vintage macs as possible. Ummm.....May I have a rope?

*pouts and whines* I wanna toy to play with too!!!

Ok enough of that. I just thought I should give fair warning, I do not do well with keeping 68ks alive. I take them in and try, try o so hard. Ive only kept 2 outta my 7 68ks alive, and not intetionally. I think i just got bad mac karma....*sniff* so so so sad. Maybe I could just be a Mac priest sending them off to the 'big apple' (not NY!!)........O well thats more of my history....

So "sticks" are for admins only? Well Da Penguin has everyright to one since he is the admin for the 68k MLA hotline server. As I am intitled to one when the HTTP & FTP server is up.

Wow, you have worse luck than I do. At least my liberated 68ks are messed up to begin with, I don't have to deal with the guilt of killing them.....

Why are you having trouble replacing the ps in a 630 box?
If you need disassembly instructions, just ask, maybe fw will share his hard won knowledge with you and I can razz him about bleeding on his 630 again.
jt
p.s. IMHO, the straight up heat exhaust and the "full metal jacket" box/weight tradeoff on the 630 form factor is probably a direct result of Apple's plans for the line. They packed the highest density of cpu's (including the second simm slot implemented on the mobo and Intel inside with an extra ram slot on the pc-comp boxes) and RFI producing equipment/cu. ft, ever attempted in a stock box. The reviews called it the "mac for expansion" or some such. I bought it and bought mine as a backup machine and because I thought I could finally have a Mac with three real serial ports. *sigh, the reality distortion field leaves no one untouched*

Hmm, or you could download the service manual and dissasemble the box correctly.

And Duck/Duct (dont yell on how its spelled!) tape....

Well, until it warms up and gets sticky and makes funny smells like its burning.....THAT is not good. Even the pyro i am, NOT in the room where i sleep.

~The Penguin

P.S. - That mean I get to take the Performa Roll of Tape ;)

Well, it's called duct tape because plumbers, or those who pose as such, use it as a temporary patch-up for leaky ducts/pipes. However, there are currently brands of duct tape that are called "duck" tape, and have a bright and colorful cartoon duck on the carton. I guess it's a case of marketing adopting the consumer's mistake?

But if its for ducts, why doesnt it stick to them? Least not in my basment it doesnt. But it does work well on Macs and their cases witht he following bonuses!:
~Superior Grip Surface
~Metallic Looking, Even comes in colors!
~Keeps dirty fingerprints OFF the actual case
~Electric Insulator
~Affordable, opposed to high grade industrial plastics and glue, blech!
~Make 'donuts' out of it and stick your macs to the wall, or even the ceiling!!
~Etc, Im sure there are more.

If you want to get anything, especially paint, to stick to galvanized sheet metal, you need to "pickle" the surface with vinegar. This removes the chalky zinc-oxide (?) coating that'll keep just about anything from sticking, at least that's the sign-shop lore from "back in the day", before baked enamel coated aluminum sheet stock and WAY before Macs.

jt: technosaur

btw: Duct tape is affordable, but getting the adhesive off again is another matter. Check my and cine's remarks in another thread for a better, though more costly, alternative. Also check out the shiny chrome version of duct tape for your Mac decorating.
