I have an Asante EN/SC (external SCSI -> ethernet adapter). I have tested it on an LCII, PowerMac 8100, LC475 and PowerBook 145B. On all these machines, when i boot the Mac, the EN/SC "freezes" the SCSI bus, and it therefore cannot boot. Anyone know what might be up with it?

Termination?
Drivers?

The drivers and manual are deep within the confines of the Cisco website somewhere.

I couldn't get it to work with my PowerBook 100 either... then again... I couldn't get the PB100 to work at all

Hi,

Well, I have an Asante EN/SC on my Classic II (works fine) and as far as I know it doesnt work on all scsi-buses. It won't work on my LC475 either, but i found that 'logical' since you can get a decent ethernetcard for it. I suspect they specifically designed it for a few Macs and it won't work on all the 25-pin scsi-buses. But, of course, I could be wrong ;-)

For the record, i tested it on my Classic II a whlie ago (forgot all about that!), and it did the same thing. Maybe it's borked completely?

Compatibility Information

Summary:
Will The EN/SC work with LC040 or 68040 Platforms

Symptom:

Solution:
Apple Technical Support indicates that some LC040s and all 68040 systems use higher SCSI transfer rates 5 Mega Bits / Second - identical to the Centris and Quadra product line systems. These faster SCSI Controllers are being used on ALL 68040 Mac and Power Macintosh systems currently released from Apple.

Since we do not support this faster transfer rate within our software or hardware, our SCSI Family of products will not work at all with these systems.

FAQ

Summary:
What Apple Platforms Work With The Desktop EN/SC?

Symptom:

Solution:
The Desktop EN/SC is similar to the original EN/SC and has the same restrictions on compatibility.

Therefore: the Desktop EN/SC is not compatible with the Macintosh IIfx, 68040 computers, including the LC475, 575, Centris, and Quadra series computers.

From the 5.5.4 Read Me file.

Also note that the Desktop EN/SC wont work with the Mac Plus, since it takes its power from the SCSI port. The Mac Plus doesnt provide power to the SCSI port.
Will not work with PowerBook family.

FAQ

Summary:
How Can I Tell The Difference Between The EN/SC Models?

Symptom:

Solution:
The Desktop EN/SC is the size and color of a micro AsantePrint. It will work with all 68000, 68020, 68030 systems EXCEPT for the Mac Plus. It gets its power from the SCSI port (the Mac Plus SCSI port does not have a power pin). It will NOT work with any of the Power book family.

The EN/SC and EN/SC10T are the size of a VHS tape, white in color (matches color of a desktop mac), and were designed to work with most desktop macs. They will not work with Quadra, Centris, IIfx, Powerbooks, or PowerMacs.

The EN/SCPB and EN/SC10TPB are the size of a VHS tape, dark gray in color (matches color of a PowerBook), and were designed to work with most desktop macs and Powerbooks. They will not work with Quadra, Centris, IIfx, or Powerbook 5xx and PowerMacs.

The Mini EN/SC and Mini EN/SC10T are smaller, dark gray in color (matches color of PowerBook), and were designed to work with most desktop macs and Powerbooks. They will not work with Quadra, Centris, IIfx, or Powerbook 5xx and PowerMacs.

The Micro EN/SC is the smallest, dark gray in color (matches color of Powerbook), and was designed to work with Powerbooks. They will not work with desktop macs, Quadra, Centris, IIfx, or PowerMacs. They will work with the Powerbook 5xx series.

Thanks for all the info, jt. I had been considering getting one of these neat little adapters. Now I know to be careful about which model I get and which machines I try to use it with.

Thanks, jt. I have the second one that you mention. However, it doesn't mention the LCII or Classic II in that list, and i can't get it working on neither of those machines.

Well, I got the white VHS-tape sized Asant Desktop EN/SC and that one works fine on my Classic II (with an external poweradapter).
