Not 68k related I expect,

WE have, have had,

wax cylinder
Vynll disc
cassette
7 Track
mini disk
cd

There is another format, you can win it at Brighton pleasure beach(though I failed at this). It is about 5cm by 5cm & on a keyring I believe.

I want to know the name so that I can search on ebay for it.

I have a mission to own & experience as many media formats as possible.

So far I have experienced;

Vynll
cd
floppy disk
hard drive
video cassette
cartridge

A few more to go yet!

Oh, but you're forgetting a few...

DAT
ADAT
SACD
DVD-A
DCC
Reel-to-reel
MicroCassette

And I sure those don't make the list complete, either.

that thing you're talking about is probably somethinc called "HitClips" we have that here in America and it doesn't even hold half of a song at CD quality... it'd be better to just browse teh 30-second previews on iTunes store the rest of yourl ife than to waste moneys getting or trying to get one of those IMHO.

I imagine CED's are highly collectable.

with Hitclips, is there a player?, can you record on them?

Quite yes. AFAIK there were only one or two players released in the UK - a Hitachi one (by far the most common) and another that I can't remember.

The players do appear on Ebay UK a bit - going for about 100 pounds. The problem is that to 'play' the movie, it uses a stylus (the theory is just like a record player), and these styluses need replacing after time.

But for true 80's authenticity, its dead cool to watch (all early 80's) films on them, like Star Wars and stuff. It all adds to the atmosphere!

I have a friend that's got one of those. The only movie that he has is The Wizard Of Oz. The records are in a plastic case that goes into the player to keep the dust off of them. He showed me the record itself and it looks like a giant CD!Go to Top of Page

There is also an electronic format that predates tape/reel-to-reel: IIRC, they were known as wire-corders. They worked more-or-less like a reel-to-reel deck, except, instead of recording on magnetic tape, they used spools of very thin steel wire. From what I've read, back in the early days, they had noticably higher sound quality then tape-based systems... Interesting stuff!

That system's still in use in flight recorders and cockpit voice recorders. Wire is sturdier than tape.
