I want to add some simple forums to my website where people can request hardware there looking for and general hardware discussion. What is the easiest / cheapest way to do this? I don't want to have to link my site to some 3rd party site to do this. I want to keep everything local on my server.

Also what's up with this site? Lots of times when I try it load it up it's down.

I like it slow

PHP has LOTS of forum possibilities, just do a simple google for php forums, and you will be amazed. There are also cgi script based forums, as well as more proprietary ones (such as this one).

BTW, my mail server is borked for a while, could you email me at level37@lycos.com to continue that MV200 shipping?

IMO, PhpBB is by far the best software. Easy to configure & learn but years to master.

http://www.phpbb.com/

You'll need a semi decent machine hosting the site tho. All that php & sql local processing is gonna need a bit of ooommph! :)

Running a board that uses SQl databases uses alot of resources on a host machine, so if your board goes over say 100 members you might see a performance decrease. So it's best to use a profesional hosting package for that part, your home machine/server might be too slow for that unless it's a high end one with lots of ram etc., and you don't mind it being tied up doing sql transactions.

:)

phpBB also has the advance of complete templates ... so you can customise every little bit of the forum layout ... as well as being alot faster and more secure than most other forums

And more compatible. In my experiences, phpBB is very nice to 68ks.

heh... yeah PHPbb is great... if you have MySQL and php installed... even I could set it up!!!

in fact.. my server project centers around a PHPbb2 forum... which is why I'm looking for a Blue/White G3 so I can run OSX.2 server... then it'll let me use "MySQL manager" with OSX...

is there any way to make like... YaBB work with MacHTTP?

I dunno...you'll still need a database server or whatever they call it, and YaBB is sorta crappy anyway....

When you start mixing and matching web server, perl, cgi etc, you sorta end up with this sticky mess that is really hard to sort out, so sometimes it's easier to go with a package that has it all.

Unless you like frequent nights up with cofee and the coder's handbook by your side.
