I'm sorry to say it... but Rhapsody and Copland won't run on any laptops, Copland isn't exactly "finished" enough to run on most desktops either.

With A/UX there is ONE and ONLY ONE possibility that was discussed here before. This is with a PowerBook 5x0. These '040 books by default have LC processors, unless you can find a PowerBook 550c. The 550c and/or any 5x0 with a 550c processor daughtercard have been *rumored* to be able to run A/UX because they had the correct motherboard architechture.

Although, "cheap laptop" isn't a phrase that comes into play either way there.
I'd say that there IS a way to get a 550c in australia.... but think the only way to get one anywhere is to fly to japan, look for anyone who has one and literally grab it from under their arms or something....

Grab a few ColorClassic IIs while you're in Japan and/or China. I hear that they are rock'n machines "everything the color classic should have been in the first place" and etc etc.

(or you could get a regular CC and shove an LC 575 or 580 motherboard in there.)

I also heard of a special hack on the daughtercard you could do where you solder on your own full-040... I'd wait for JT or one of the other big-time-hardware-hacking MLAers to chime in here before you do anything crazy to that PowerBook you don't yet have though...

Ok, after some thought I have decided I can cope with it not beign a laptop, now, which OS do you sugest Rahpsody or Copland?

Now, I dont want an OS that can do work on, I want one that is buggy and will keep a comptuer minded individual entertained for a good period of time. (Its never going on the net or anything).

What one is more..different, and 'unexplored'

"unexplored" eh?

Well if you want the buggiest most not-working least explored OS, I'd say it's copland an an X100 PowerPC for you!

It'll work on a 6100, 7100 or 8100. I would suggest that you run it on a 7100, because you can get them fast enough for 'stuffness' and noone here has run it on one of those before

Supposedly, you could do real work in it because it'll run system 7.5 programs or something... but either way

I was trying to do rhapsody on a PC and I was never able to make it work, if someone else could make it work I'd LOVE to see it *(on physical PC hardware)

Don't look at me . . . search posts by Alien, the 5x0/040 hack he did puts him in a class all by himself!

I suggest OpenStep on x86 hardware (even a cheap laptop, if hardware is supported!). It's very stable and works well for actual work, and it's cool to play around with.

A/UX on a 540c with a 'full' 68040 and a Gestalt hack has long been a dream of mine...

Alien's was running NetBSD, IIRC.

Yup. I doubt A/UX would run, even with a gestalt hack.

hehehe..... A gestalt hack (0nce the extension loads) temporarily changes the machine ID number so that you can basically force (your IIci for say) to be another mac (like a quadra 610)

I've never gotten it, or the others out there to work.

Well, actually, it just pretends to be another Mac. If there were a piece of software that could actually make a Mac be another Mac, I would be buying lots of Mac Pluses and making them be dual-1.45 GHz G4's. :p

temporarily changing the ID number of one mac... making it pretend to be another mac.

hence the name "wish I were"

There was another one one time... I used it to try to turn my 7300 into a G3 (silly me) and that was right before the 7300 (in it's frst coming mine ye) borkulated it's hard drive....
