Hi, whenever I reformat the HD of an old mac and install new system software it forgets what kind of mac it is. For example when I go "About this Macintosh" it's just a generic "Macintosh" or "Power Macintosh".

Is there a way to get the model name back?

I think this is related to the version of Mac OS which you are running. System 7.1 seems to report the models just fine, and I didn't do anything special while installing it. Mac OS 9 cannot even tell the difference between my G3 and MOL.
