Hi,

On a mac, is it possible to have a PC style OS Selection screen if there are 3 OS's on a hardrive?

If not, how does Dual Booting work on a Mac?

Normally you just have different Systems on seperate drives, and select which one you want via the Startup Disk control panel.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation.

Although, it they are seperate kinds of OSs, for example, BeOS and OS9 on my 7300, BeOS' bootloader will often rebound off of the OS9 startup to get it going and it will display a small screen offering to go to BeOS...

(cheap me couldn't get 2 hard drives at that time)

Or on seperate partitions, rather than necessarily drives.

Newer computers do have a boot disk selection screen at startup if you hold Option.

You don't need to have separate drives, you can also do it with partitions. For my OS 8.6 machines, I created a 35 MB partition that is big enough to hold a copy of the OS and a set of disk-repair utilities. For OS 7.5, you could probably get by with a partition of under 10 MB. If the OS on the main partition gets cranky, you can switch to the "Utilities" partition and repair what is usually the start-up disk. I also created an ultra-slim copy of 7.5.3 + utilities that will fit on a 4 MB RAM disk.

I remember back in the bad-old days of floppies and System 5 or 6 (I think) when running a application on a disk or floppy caused the Mac to switch to the copy of the System that was installed on that disk or floppy. You could also switch OS copies after booting just by double-clicking on either Finder or System. Sometimes you never knew which copy of theSystem you were running with unpredictable results.

BTW, here's a nifty page with Mac start-up codes:

My favorite, and the most useful for this discussion, is:

cmd-opt-shift-delete-# which boots from a specific SCSI ID # (# = SCSI ID number)
