I'm wanting to put a list together of Macs that you can swap the logic boards on. From the very basic like the 550 to 575 to the complex that require the PSU to be changed out and the case to be moded. Please provide links to how to web pages if you have them. I'm not looking for hardcore case mods like on Apple Fritter.

I like it slow

I would like to put this in the MLAgazine also!

I know that the 6500, 6400, 6360, 5500 and 5400 are completely logicboard compatible...

I also am interested in how this little 'cataloging project' turns out as I'd like to have something like this in the MLAgazine...

(*desperate for content, you see)

dont forget your "Mystic" and "Takky" in your "very complicated section"

that and the PB 190, and 5300 are interchangable, and the 5x0 series have identical motherboards, differing only in processor and screen.

8500 <-> 8600 and 9500 <-> 9600 motherboards are virtually identical, with orientation of some connectors changed, though you cant change from 8500 to 9500 due to case differences.

840AV/8100/8500 motherboards are interchangable.

that is all I can think of tonight..

Have fun!

LC and LCII, LCIII via an upgrade of the case (or something like that)

SE, SEfdhd, SE 30

Classic, ClassicII

Mac II, IIx IIfx

IIvx IIvi quad 650 PM 7100

IIcx IIci (onboard video) Quadra 700 (onboard video and ethernet)

quadra 900, 950 and the mystical AWGS 95...

ANS500 and 700

*are you going for all the compatibilities here?

BTW...I thought the 8500 was taller than the others? and has the power button on bottom'stead of the top of th case

more to come in the listingless laterness!

(cory needs MLAgazine content)

The 7200 and 7500/ 7600 can be swapped. You should also be able to swap 8xxx boards to the 75xx class. LEM has some of this info in the profiles.

No you don't need a case upgrade. I've swapped boards around LCIIs and LCIIIs before, and everything snaps in fine. However, you do need to replace the fan/speaker assembly with a seperate fan and speaker like those from an LCII, LCIII or LC475. Also, LC475 boards work in all pizzabox LC cases.

Wow ok I can tell this is going to be hard to keep up with. Consolidation. Here is what we have so far:

Mac plus--> Mac 128k--> Mac 512k
Classic--> Classic II
SE--> SEfdhd--> SE/30
Mac II--> Mac IIx--> Mac IIfx
Mac IIcx--> Mac IIci--> Quadra 700
LC--> LCII--> LCIII--> 475
550--> 575
840AV--> 8100--> 8500
Quadra 900--> Quadra 950--> Work Group Server 95
6360--> 5400--> 5500--> 6400--> 6500
7200--> 7500--> 7600
8500-->8600
9500-->9600

PB 190--> PB5300

If anyone objects to this information please say so! Also I need to know if any case mods are required for any of the logic board swaps listed above. An example of this would be the 550--> 575. This swap will work but you also need the back plate to the 575 since the ports on the 575 logic board will not line up with the 550 back plate.

It's not 68k, but the 7500 and 8500 are very very easily interchangeable too (7500 <--> 8500). This suggests that anything in the 7200, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600 range is interchangeable, assuming the the 7200 has a removable/replaceble panel for the AV ports. Also, a discussion on 'fritter suggests that a 9500/9600 could go in an 8600, because the 8600 has a 6-slot PCI opening in the back even though the 8600 only has 3 PCI slot on the mobo.

ooOOoo PowerMac 8200... I believe that it did exist it was a 7200 mobo in an 8100/8500 case

further supporting most of those theories...

I wouldn't ever mess with the jive of an 8600 though...

(yeah that was... corny)

I have heard of people putting PowerMac 7100 mobos into IIcx/ci/Q700 cases. They seem to use an identical powr supply.You'd need to hack the case a bit though at the back to get all the ports to line up and stuff.

Blasphemy... I believe the 7100/650/IIvx/IIvi/P600 PSUs are similer now that someone mentions it... I bet it wouldn't take modding at all....

Any Insight 7100 and IIci/cx/q700 owners?

Ok so all the logic boards listed above can be swaped out with no moding? I have changed my mind about this list where making. I'm looking for just basic logic board swaps. If we tryed to list all the swaps including mods this would get crazy and out of hand. So please check the list again and let me know. If your looking for pics of logic boards to check out go here.

Correct, Cory.

Oh, and the 7300 ahs the knockout panel for the DAV board, but there's no port for it on the mobo. The only reason the knockout panel is there is because it shares the exact same case with the other machines from its series.

What about the centris 610 becoming a PowerMac 6100?
What about my perfectly good PB150 board living in a PB145 body, which requires a case mod becuase the on/off button doesn't line up?
What about the Powerbook G3/250(Kanga) fitting in a PB3400 case if you remember to move the Power Supply board as well.
What about the fact that the IIsi power supply pinouts match the IIci motherboard but I can't figure out how to make them sit in my spare 7200 case?
