So I went on the hunt for funky Mac stuff in Toronto, or the T-Dot, if you will. I was going to go to a couple places but just went straight to Goodwill. It was raining a bit also. The Goodwill just keeps on getting better and better!. I almost feel guilty buying some of this stuff. They had a: massive supermac monitor, Multiple Mac Pluses (no yellowing, still very grey) Mac SE Classic Classic II Yellowed Quadra 650 LC II LC 475 LC 575 Quadra 840AV Performa 5200 So this is how it goes. I spot the Quadra 840AV and squirrel it away so no one will take it. I test it, with the 1710 monitor but the monitor is dead. I get another monitor and test the 840. It's 40mb ram, caddy cd-rom, 180mb HD and a second 2 GB HD, it was such a nice machine!, a little bit of yellow though. This guy spots it's as well says he's looking for a computer "for his son" and "it's his son's birthday tomorrow". He expressed interest in the machine, I showed him the Quadra 650 and LC 575 (both decent machines) so I can keep this gem and I bought it for $25 CDN. I was just to the parking lot and he made one last attempt, he mentioned his four sons and I felt a bit quilty. I have an iMac and like 7 other 68k's and I would'nt be able to play with the machine until a week went I come home from school (no monitor, keyboard, mouse). So I sold it to this guy for $42 CDN. I went back into Goodwill and walked around again and found a Performa 5200. I would've offered him that if I knew it was there. I tested the Performa and it worked!, so I bought it for $25 CDN. So in a way I bought two computers and PPC for $5. How about that 'eh? You bought a 5200 for $25 CDN?! Do you know what you're getting into? If you did then you wouldn't want one if someone gave it to you. I'd take it back right now if they'll let you! Those are the worst Macs ever made. If you buy one, don't get one unless it's under $15 CDN or better yet wait for someone to give you one. I wouldn't mind a 5200... it's nice AIO faster than :some: other 68ks and etc and it supports the video ina nd junk. I'd suggest that you get the TV/FM radio system and the Video system and *maybe* the MPEG sysem and use it like a videophone and/or a niice macintosh television Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide |

Don't be silly. They're only crap if you consider the speed they run at compared to the processor that they pack. It's not as if they go after your first-born or anything like that. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

They make terriffic TVs! And if you have a big@$$ IDE hard drive spare, you can put it into the 5200, plug it into your stereo, load it with GrayAMP and have yourself a bad@$$ MP3 stereo component. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |

Four Questions:1) I upgraded my iMac to a 20GB HD and I have a 6GB kicking around, would the 5200 support it?. 2) There's space in the back of the 5200 for another drive, could I hook the 6GB and another 2GB HD together?. 3) There's this funky icon thing on the back of the panel. It looks like Y but with another prong. What's that for? 4) I thought the 603 was worse than the 601?, or is it the 603e? The Peforma 5200 is slow mainly due to the fact the motherboard is a bastard spawn between some old 68k macs, so I recall. Fast processor, crippled so much it is not funny.

1) Yes, there's no reason as to why it shouldn't. 2) Nope, there's no support for a second drive. You may be able to hax0r the edge connector and put on a drive cable with another connector, but this has never been done, IIRC and is not supported. 3) Sounds like its for TeeeVeee! Does it have a TeeeVeee tuner card? 4) No, the 603 is actually technically better than the 601. The machines they were used in just gave them a bad name. Hope this helps! -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Number of Contraband (PPC) Liberated from the Dumpster: 1 |
