Well, the title says it all, and you guys are the most resourceful bunch I have met to date. I can't find any black and white answer yet though...

I don't believe they do, at least (my favorite desktop modular mac) the 7300 doesn't...

Sorry JT, I guess I had thought aboot it too much to myself. I was wondering if they were needed to boot. I have both a 7200 and a 7500 with no rom simm, and they turn on and give me a grey screen, but no mouse, mac face, etc.

hmm... I'll have to take another look at my own 7x00's motherboard..
Maybe in the 7300 the ROM was 'final' enough that it needn't be offboard?

My 7500 never had a ROM SIMM to begin with, and never acted different when it had a 9500 ROM installed. It doesn't make a difference, because IIRC, the ROM is on motherboard.

AFAIK, the 7100 (along with the rest of the x100 series) was the only one that needed a ROM SIMM and then only if it had the cache installed, otherwise the onboard ROM was all that was needed, but I'm no expert.

Ok, thanks guys! I guess something is wrong with each of these mobos then. The 7500 I just got in the mail, and some small electronic part fell off, so I was suspicious. I looked at the circutry, and it appeard to be part of the RAM controller, but that was just my novice self looking at it. I was just making sure I wasn't doing something stupid before I go to USPS (pkg was insured, tahnkfully). Once again, thanks all!

I'd try checking the RAM, too. Maybe there's no VRAM? My 7600 has no need for a ROM SIMM.

Does it need vram in the slots? Is there none onboard?
I know the ram is good, just had it working and tested in the 8600.

I just had a quick look at GURU, and 7200's have onboard VRAM but 7300;'s and 7500's don't. Meaning.....yes you do need VRAM.

It's all good for me, because I don't have any other mac I'd want to put the 7300's VRAM into...

Here is my experience on a 7500.

I upgraded a 7200 with a 7500 MB. I bought RAM, VRAM, and a CPU upgrade. Put all the parts together and got a very unstable machince. It would sometimes boot and other times not. After much swapping of equipment and general unhappiness, I found that I had a bad 128MB stick of RAM. The 7500 is now running on one 128MB SIMM with a G3 upgrade and is very stable. My 7500 does not have a ROM SIMM.

Yeah. Don't the 7500 and 7600 have the same mobo? If that's so then guru may be wrong, because the ROM slot in my 7600 is unpopulated.Go to Top of Page

Just looked at my 7200 board. The ROM simm slot is empty. To the left of the slot are 4 chips soldered to the board that look like the ROMs.

lowendmac.com says the 7600 is the same as the 7500.
