I'm looking for information (and possibly to buy) a few crazy old PCs that know exist, but can't find..

1) Toshiba Infinia, I have info on this, it had a little lcd panel that did stuff for you mounted to the monitor
2)Acer Aspire, nothing too special, had one, but still in the category
3)IBM Aptiva, this is where it gets interesting, this one had a 2 part CPU
the bottom part had the PSU the HDD and some more drive bays... connected to the top port with alot of the ports, cdrom and floppy drive. the cdrom andfloppy popped up in this crazy way...

I know that there's more of them! I remember one from NEC iThink (a 2 part one) and loads other different kinds of crazy non-beige 'multimedia PCs" from the middle-90s...

any infos? or any ones anyone else has or knows about.... this kinda stuff is fun

Thanks...

As far as I know IBM was making other Aptivas pretty recently... just not the crazy one... I was at a swap meet when I was in 5th or 6th grade and tried to convince this guy to give me one of 'em for like... $50... :drools: they have like Pentium IIs iThink...

(the reason I don't look at the manufacturer's websites for the ones I don't know about is because I don't know who made them

Cory, you'll want to know that i have seen a Compaq (Presario?) that looked a lot like the Performa 5200 a couple of years ago.

I've seen a desktop that looks like this

Compaq also had an AIO that was kinda like some AIO macs... it was a Prolinea NETstation or something... *(signifying being a network terminal and the like...)

that presario desktop had the speakers on it and looked pretty cool... I'd use one if it came free or something like that

Interesting. I thought they only did a Presario like that. Ah well.

Getting info on old PCs is very hard because they are seldom loved liked old Macs are. I've picked up various old PC laptops over the years and discovering anything about them is impossible. Any attempt to use Google results in a zillion hits from laptop battery makers, etc. At best I might find a manufacturer's tech support pages or distributor's spare parts list.

The Wintel world has nothing like all the Apple-related machine spec sites, help sites, museum sites, etc. You can find dozens of useful sites that talk about the Powerbook 140. But there is almost nothing useful on the roughly-equivalent Dell NL20 (a 20 MHz 386 laptop with a small grayscale LCD).

Wintel machines have no soul. Nobody cares about them even if they do use them. So nobody creates websites devoted to them.

But I do hope you can find the info that you are looking for.

Getting information on old PC's is heard because alot went out of buisiness, and WAY before pdf's were in use. Apple information is available because apple is still around.

There are alot of gaming sites dedicated to DOS era games, a few sites dedicated to PC jr's, original IBM's, some compaqs. Anything after the flood of clones doesnt have much of a following. But quite a few hardware addons have a following (soundblaser cards, gravis ultrasound, roland, northgate keyboards, 3dfx video cards, etc.

It probably has to do with PC's becoming so mainstream early, and macs being more rare. If everybody owned a ferrari then a ferrari wouldnt have the same exotic apeal would it (not saying macs are ferraris, just that they are not as common.. and alot goes into their look).

but macs ARE ferarris!!!!

I think that creating an InfoBASE on old PCs and something like that....

It'd be a great undertaking... and doing it "one manufacturer at a time" would be a great way to do stuff.....

Some PCs have personalities and souls... if you give it to them....

My PCs have had heart and soul because I made them that way.

Just a thought.

My Dell has a heart and soul. But anyway....

I think an InfoBASE would be a great idea too. And we could group them by their companies. For example, all the Dells would be in one group, Compaqs in another, HPs in another, etc.
