shak is typing this from his Quadra840av.

The reason that shak is using his 840av is because after installing 2 128MB dimms to give his powermac 7600/132 320MB ram in total, his powermac booted once & then decided not to boot. botting with extensions on or off didn't help.

Well I was using someone elses install of os 8.6 which I have had quite a bit of trouble with, so I just installed my os 8.1.

rebooted & got all the stuff I allways detest such as flashing icon while ppp is active, had to re-enter all passwords etc, netscape4.0.8 had forgotton who I am, NS 7 didn't want to work & neither did quicktime.

I tried browsing with my 7600/132 but it was only "half working", it would load one page, but then when I clicked a link it would just say it was loading a page, but not actually do anything.

As you can see my 840av is working considerably better than my 7600/132.

I'm going to go & watch Pocahontas with my son then come back to it later.

It would have been so nice to have that machine working with 256 MB (pluswhatever you had)

Have you tried to take the new memory out and just use the old stuff? or just using the new memory?

You might want to run a horse hair brush or blast some air into the DIMM slots and the reseat your DIMMS. Probably you should do this with everything that plugs into a slot, save the power & drive cables.

I know it sounds funny, but when I got my 7600/233, it was really dusty, and I got almost the same problem when I tried fiddling with the DIMMS. I think it was in one of the VRAMS. Luckily that was the only thing I had done since it had been working fine a few minutes before. It worked fine after I cleaned out the contacts on the DIMMS and on the motherboard.

I don't know about yours, but my 7600 tends to be a real dust hog.

Then again, you could've just got bad DIMMS or ESD or something.

Also, little 7600 likes to have his PRAM reset with TechTool whenever a boot doesn't go right.Go to Top of Page

To reset the PRAM hold down Command Option P R as soon as you can after pressing the power key.

Keep holding them down until the mac has chimed 3 times

It's a good idea to do this aftre installing any hardware but it also resets te clock and video resolution.

You could try putting the RAM in different slots, there is a slight chance that one is faulty but I would be surprised if both did not work.

It's not clear though, now that you have OS 8.1 back on do you still have all the ram installed?

Also download gauge pro, (at least i think that's the one) and let it run the memory tests for an hour or so (overnight if you want to make sure) this will give you a fairly good indication as to whether or not the RAM is at fault.

However 8.6 and 8.5 were some of the crappiest versions of the Mac OS that I ever had the misfortune to use, I ended up going straight from 8.1 to 9.0.4 on my machines, using someone elses installation doesn't help either.

Anyway have no fear you should receive a parcel soon!

p.s. a lot of the software you installed probably doesn't like 8.1 especially NS 7

hehehe... resetting PRAM always works for me :)
I've never installed new RAM in the 7300 though...
