Need your help guys; I'm trying to get my LC-III networked to my TiBook G4 over a cross cable - I've assigned IPs to both, Asante MCLC card is recognized by the LC-III, activity LEDs flicker, but neither is able to ping/connect to the other. Any suggestions?

What System are you running on the LCIII? You might need to upgrade the version of AppleTalk or something

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation.

Whew! Finally, it's done. Thing is, old cards such as the MacCon and MCiLC from Asante do not support autonegotiating hubs (ie. 10/100Mbps). Since the iBook, TiBook, or iMac for that matter, all carry autonegotiating ethernet slots, crossover cables are out of the question. The solution is to use a 10BaseT hub.

To connect OS 6.x or 7.x to OS X, here's an excellent link:
http://www.euronet.nl/users/mvdk/osx.html

Here's the killer that got it done for me:
You will need to enable AppleShare via AppleTalk in Mac OS X 10.1.x Use the NetInfo Manager application and go to /config/AppleFileServer. Modify the attribute "use_appletalk" from 0 to 1. Restart file sharing in the System Preferences

Congradulations Hemant, for confusing ML5!

And to all, take Hemant Kamat's tip about those older ethernet cards.

While I've not experienced this myself with my macs... I'll take note of it if I ever do get one of those cards.
