Hey everyone. First of all, just let me say hi - i haven't been around here in a LONG time, mostly because I recently got a G4 iMac (15" 800mhz), and have been too preoccupied with thta to worry about my lowly Mac SE. However, I've recently run into something that has me thinking about my SE quite a bit lately..I have a little website, very low traffic, but I have a Forum (just for my friends and such), and also use blog software. I was very fortunate to find someone (via spymac) who had a Linux box in his basement that he was offering free, ad-less account on, wiht PHP, CGI, MySQL, the works. However, he (rather stupidely) pimped the hell out of his serve ron spymac, and got so many people signing up that he was forced to shut it down due to too much bandwidth use. So now I am stuck without a server for my site. That's where my SE comes in. It's just been sitting here on my desk, not doing much, but in perfectly good condition. I have heard several stories of SE's used as web servers, and I have browsed sites hosted on SE's and there's not even much of a speed problem. But I have a question: can I get PHP? That's the big barrier - without PHP, it woudl be useless to me (since I already have a fre host WITHOUT PHP). So, how can I, if at all, install PHP on my SE? I really don't know alot about this, but I have come accross something called MacHTTP which claims to alow me to use my SE as a webserver, but I don't know how to use PHP on it (I haven't bothered to install the MacHTTP software yet). Also, CGI and MySQL would be very cool too, but PHP is the big one. I'm willing to do pretty much anytihng you can throw at me to avoid having Ads on my page or paying for a host. I'll even install Linux, but I don;t even know if that's possible on an SE, and even if it was, you'd need to walk me thru it, since i know pretty much Vilch about Linux. Please help me out. Thanks. |

Basically, I think the answer is no.There is no PHP for (68k) Mac OS. I'd really like to use PHP, but it seems Mac Perl is the only option, but I doubt that would run on an SE. Quid Pro Quo has some CGI functionality, but nowhere along the lines that you are talking. You'd need to have a flavour of Unix running to get PHP. Danamania.com employs this, (Debian Linux, Apache & PHP. Thats runs on a 605. In short, an SE hasnae got the power. Jobf. http://jobf.kicks-ass.org

An SE/30 running some flavor of UNIX (Linux, BSD, A/UX) should do the job just fine.Official 68kMLA Music and NeXT Expert Macs Liberated: SE (2), LC, IIsi, PB 145b, Quadra 700 (2), LC 575, 6100 (2), PB 5300, PowerMac 5400/200, Performa 6400/180 PCs liberated from Windoze: 3 |

What about FileMaker Pro 4 running Web Companion? Would that just be too slow on an SE even if the demand is ultra low?
