Hi everyone

NS7 takes a while to start up causes hard drive whirring noises & then it dosn't display all the window & displays windows half off the screen.

I am thinking maybe control panels colour sync, but not all the control panels are installed.

The ppc is my nightmare, all I have done is spent a long time listening to hard drive whirr, being informed that I need this or that plug in/extra I spent about 30 minutes trying to download/install icq, well it downloaded, installed but then when I tried to access chat rooms, my browser said, "this page is not available on this server"

I then tried to record video(hooked up vcr via s-video), tried to record(first via video monitor pro, then via apple video player), both times being informed that I need something extra, so I clicked ok to let it download it, 5 minutes later it said I have downloaded it, then it said, but there is newer software ont the server which you should download, so I played along & clicked download, but then when it had done, another 5 mins, I tried to run the video recording programs, but no it still needed the extras, but then it tried to download & it said, "you don't need to download, you already have the software"

It does make me wonder, will I spend the next 5 years, doing no work, just upgrading, by which time my mac will be obsolete?

I am running NS 4.0.8 right now, at least it works when it works.

The powermac plays vcd's & NS4.0.8 works faster so I hav'nt lost out as such.

Netscape 7.0 seems to run slow even on here (GHz TiBook on OSX) I haven't tried it all that much though...

Get Mozilla. It prevents you from having to use a Mordor$oft product, and its faster than Nutscrape.

Never used those, but you'll probably need to look in the doco and install the exact recommended version of QuickTime it says there. I'd uninstall the newer version of QuickTime completely first, so you don't run into any incompatabilities. Probably somebody went on there and was moving extensions around and "accidentally" removed some QuickTime extensions. It's easiest to just intsall QuickTime anew and forget about trying to track this down.

That's the trouble with using a stale OS on a computer you just got. Or did you install it recently? Sorry, I don't have the time to read back over past history in all the posts about the PowerMac.

Give it a few weeks. I'm sure you'll have it pinned down eventually. Reworking a stale OS can be frustrating and time consuming, but eventually, if you stick to it, you'll get it done.

Oh, sorry, back to you NS7 problem. Yep, I'd say do what maclover5 says and go with Mozilla. I've never used it, but everyone else likes it. Maybe someday I'll give it a try.

The thing about NS7 and other newer software is that it wants at least 800x600 resolution or maybe even more. If you can't pump up to the higher resolution, you're just better off sticking with older versions or Mozilla or whatever. Besides, you've got to remember that you're using a computer that's a few years old, so the best software for this system is going to be a few years old also. Trying to run the latest and greatest is only going to give you headaches.

Hard Drive:
If you're using the same Quantum Fireball 1.2G hard drive I had in my 7600, this is a very loud drive! If it gets too annoying, try swapping drives. Other than that, the hardware sounds pretty good.Go to Top of Page

Shak, I can throw in a copy of Mozilla too, it's not the latest but it is faster than NS 7, it doesn't have any email gubbins but I can put Eudora in to. Contact me by email if there are any other large'ish downloads you want as well.

Incidentally ICQ is not used to access chat rooms it's just an instand messanger and you have to add buddies to it. If a chat room says it cannot be found on this server then that''s a problem at their end and nothing to do with you.
