"The only One-Mac Radio Station in the entire valley"

this has always been my dream (since I've always lived in a valley)

I'm going to find out about starting a small... possibly short-range or low-power FM radio station...

I'll probably run it from either my 7300 or my 6500....

Sounds really cool!

Just a few questions if you don't mind:

Why do you need a computer to run the station?

How many watts?

Where/how did you get the equipment and how much? Did you make it?

Is it going to be stereo or monaural?

How are you going to get around the FCeeCee if at all?

Good Luck!

The computer is to play all the music whenever I'm not talking or making my own music...

I haven't gotten equipment yet, and I am considering building it on my own.
There is packages and literally "radio station in a box" available.

It's probably going to be few enough watts that the FCC either doesn't care about it, or doesn't know. Although I think that the Radio Station In a Box is 35 watts which *should* give a range of 6+ miles... There's NOTHING in that valley really so I bet it'll be 8-9 miles range

The radio station in a box is stereo, same with most other transmitters

while i continue my homebrew electronics binge... how hard would it be to build my own transmitter? do they (pirate radio stations, that is ) use any exotic equipment or is it pretty much all off-the-shelf RadioShack and Mouser Electronics parts?

sounds like fun...

The funny thing is radio shack actually sells ALL THE PARTS in a KIT!@!!!1

it's a very low power like (one of those iPod transmitter) things... but it wouldn't be too hard (iThink) to just jack up the power... and actually that is kinda one of the things I want to do.

All the electronics to make a low-power xmitter are most definately available off-the-shelf. It's finding decent schematics on what to do with them that's the hard part. iThink that the engineers who draw them up are afraid of lawsuits from the EffeCeeCee or something.

It would be much appreciated if you could provide any of the schematics for that xmitter, as I've been looking for some good ones in that range for a long time.

Cool. I'd appreciate it if you could digitize the schematics. If it's not too much trouble.

Thanks in advance.Go to Top of Page

It would probably be a good idea to pick up some books on basic soldering techniques from RadioShack® or something.

Kits for AM/FM broadcasters are at http://www.ramseyelectronics.com/hk/default.asp?page=AM/FM%20Broadcasters

You'd best have a license! The FCC has some big-@ss fines if they find out about this kind of stuff!

You'll probably end up using one of those low-power transmitters to drive a linear amplifier of some kind...maybe you could use one designed for 6M or 2M amateur use, but I don't know if that would work.

Oh, and how are you going to do station ID? I know that with amateur radio, the FCC requires that you identify yourself every 10 minutes, and I think that there are similar requirements for professional AM/FM stations.

WHY would I do "amatuer" radio? isn't that the one wheree anyone wants to listen to youhas to either build a reciever or buy a special $700 radio?

that'll be costing MORE for me and other people if I were just to get the 35Watt "radio station in a box" (4 grand) and actually :gasp: pay liscencing

in California iThink it's every hour...
I might just turn the radio statio off at night then... dunno

One of the best movies I ever saw, which I can't remember the name is of this guy in high school who has his own radio station and is blasting the "establishment" and the whole time the FCC is trying to chase him down. hehehe...

Aparently you don't need a liscence to do an AM station... or the non-liscence limit for AM is just alot higher for AM than FM... I might consider this also... but 35 watts of FM broadcasting power sounds more fun as found here

The movie you're talking about is called "Pump Up The Volume", staring Christian Slater. More info at http://us.imdb.com/Title?0100436 .
Hope this helps!

You most certainly do need a license to operate on AM!

I suggest that you get a license for FM from the FCC. As for that transmitter you mentioned, you won't need the mixer if you'll be operating it with the Mac.

well the 'give' for AM is more or something then because alot of the kits I see say "don't need an FCC liscence!" "YAY" and junk like that...

The mac is mostly to get the music and/or other content... esp. when I'm gone and sleeping. I want to have a real radio-station mic and other junk...

Those can be a little trickier and are generally considered to be out of the realm of the ameteur electronics tinkerer. The trick is that the audio and video are on 2 slightly seperated frequencies.

Besides, the FCC charges outrageous licensing fees for TV and they'll have a field day on you if you don't pay up!

It is an interesting thought, though. For some reason, TV doesn't seem to have that same mystique as radio. At least not with me.Go to Top of Page

So I'm guessing that a prebuilt system even then is totally out of the realm of possibility... assuming that we just got a $2800 TiBook and like a thousand + in warranties so that was kinda well... i could have gotten by withoutht the warranties because the way it was bought (In February) the apple think that it was purchased in November... (alot more than the 90 days!)

so I guess that it'll be more than the $4000 for the radio station nin a box eh? ohwell... [:'(]

I'm sure it will be much more. This is why you get 10 minutes of programming and 20 minutes of commercials, because they have to pay for all that way overpriced equipment and the way way overpriced licensing.Go to Top of Page

I'm so-very-sorry to hear that... I would have liked to try a TV station... Maybe one day I'll just see what it looks like if I were to apply a TV like clear logo on final cut or something.... and output it to a closed TV network... yeah that's what I'll do

Uhh... meters or miles?

If I wanted 50 meters... which is legal with the FCC they sell the kits and even preassembled ones for like... $20... I was thinking something that could go a wee bit farther... besides I don't think I'll be doing the radio station... until I have my projector... I also seem to keep thinking that I'll be allowed to buy another mac ex: from SlowMac... gotta check the PAF on that one...

$$ is very tight and my dad has before expressed a desire to sell my PowerBook :glayven: it won't hapen though thank the god of keeping computers.
