anybody know where i might find one or two 8080a's to use in my Altair-based homebrew computer?

I was planning on using the Z80 but i really dont want to because that would mean redesigning the cpu module of the Altair and im not entirely sure how to go about doing that...

...money isnt really too much of an issue here, i have lots of birthday money to burn

Back in the late 70s, you could buy 8080As at Radio Shack right off the components rack. Otherwise, I am clueless. If you could use a Z8 (a newer embedded processor version of the z80), you could take apart a payphone. I saw the inside of one recently and it had a Z8 MPU.

Good luck.

I might have some laying around somewhere. I'll have a look after work tonight and get back to you.

It was a full-sized outdoor Qwest payphone with blue-green fluorescent display (probably about 15 x 3 characters). Is the Z8 at all compatible with your design?

yep, the amd r8080a is exactly what i need, but my PAF doesn't allow for eBay (dont ask, long story) so unless i REALLY beg that wont happen

and i wouldn't need to rip the z8 out of a payphone, i'd just buy one for three bucks from http://www.jdr.com (easier to buy one than try to break into a payfone, trust me... the first things i built when i got my soldering iron were phreak boxes)

unless... maybe theres a schematic online for a Z80 replacement for the 8080a cpu board in the altair, but if there is its sure not on google...

I've also found the 6800 and all of its support chips for reasonable prices... so why is the 8080a the only late 70's processor not still in production? i could use a 6502, 6800, Z80, anything else easily but the one i need (want?) is NOWHERE...

any suggestions?

Good. I checked, and I don't have any 8080's. I do have a stack of 6802's, though.

oops, I just blew an 8080a up the other day with some old fireworks.

It was a pull from an IBM piece of crap.

HAR!

you could take them, discharge them with your enemies and repaint the cases to match older black peesees that look cool, but you couldn't get the monitor for them

Shame they weren't chucking out Ipexes. If they were, i'd grab a couple, take all the good parts out of 'em, take 'em home, and back over them with the Holden.

Mmm, that explains the funny modem-like noises you get when you call modern payphones. I wonder if there's a way to bypass this and get them to ring? There must be a way, as that is what the phone company does when they ring it.
BTW, where did you get this payphone? I'd just die if I had one of these!

While you're painting them, you might as well paint them in camouflage to give them a fair chance and make the hunt a little more challenging.

It looks, goes, and handles nothing like a tank, but they last for a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. Our old 1983 WB Holden ute is still running fine, apart from the dodgy Pioneer "stereo" that Dad put in before i was even born....a lot of Falcons from that era are slowly starting to bite the dust.

Would an 8088 do the trick? If so, I've got a couple of machines here that have those processors, if you were interested.

I don't think they're compatible. I could be wrong, though.
