After having someone give me a 1 GB SCSI drive for free, and getting 2x 16mb ram simms for next to nothing, I decided to rebuild my 6100 that was in MANY parts around my room. After almost 2 hours of tinkering (Man my system disks are scratched ), it is up and running, with os 8.1 and 40 mb of ram total. But...

Now what?
I have no idea what to do with this machine! Didn't the nubus PPCs have issues with *nixes? Is there anything else I can run on it?

Cool! It would be cool though....to....*cough*....find a copy of *cough* Copland *cough* and install it.... I'm sure a copy isn't too hard to find if you look...

There are ways of making UNIX run on it. Search the Yellow Dog HOWTOs for the one about YDL on NuBus Macs. No guarantee that it will work (I haven't tried it), but it's a possibility.

Either that, or MkLinux, which is so far out of date it's useless!

Hey Penguin! doesn't YOUR HotLine server have Copland in it?

If so... I'm sure that MacLover5 would love for you to install it on your 6100

you could set it up in the kitchen of your house and let your family have the privelege of using it by using it as a recibe book?

ooOOOoo it's got a GB Hard drive and 40 MB of RAM....

that'd probably make a good SETI machine :-\

Is there any reason why OS 8 would not be reading my CD? It seems to not like CD-Rs at all...

What version? Copland or the real OS 8?

Real OS 8, which I just realized was not yet upgraded to 8.1. I did this and it works fine now, but the installation of copland seems to be an absolute PITA!!
Anyone have any pointers?

~The Penguin

P.S.- If the discussion of Copland is bad in terms of legallities, just let me know and I will change it or summat.

You need to connect another Mac to the PPC to run a debugger app apparently. Not sure though, because i've never installed it.

I "sorta" have it installed. I can get it to load to a point of a blue screen, with yellow text saying no kernel found. And some sort of alert window, with no text in it. Its cool it has worked this far....I will report back later.

Also, it says there is a preference to run it without the debugger on another machine...

We shall see!

Do you have a debugging machine hooked up to the serial port?

You'd be well off with a 68k like a LCII or sommat that has at least 8 MB of RAM....

There should be some documentation of that on the install image and the program(s) you need....

If you get anything working tell us

See http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/solutions/ydl_general/nubus.shtml for NuBus YDL installation info. MkLinux really is so obsolete as to be useless. Nothing will compile right, and there are very few packages available for it that do anything useful today. You're really better off putting some flavor of Linux on there and having a machine that's actually useful.

Is it an AV mac? you could get the AV components and it'd make a killer OS 8.1 machine with AV junk!

IT WORKS!!!

Yep, Copland is fully installed, and semi working (no debugger machine attatched!)

I must say, it has by far the coolest startup to date. The best way to describe it is a big blue square, which "pixalizes" into the mac os logo. I haven't gotten to use it much yet, it is really slow and unstable right now (debugger?), but if/when I can, I plan on getting some screen shots of it up. Are there any good OS 7.5 or earlier apps for screen shots?

Since the very beginning (the 128k) one could use Cmd-Shift 3 to take a picture of the whole screen. Cmd-Shift 4 lets you draw a box around the part you want to take a picture of.

Congrats on Copland!

Yeah, too bad it crashes before i can tell if the key combo works!
I really need to get a performa from a friend to run as the debugger.

OH yeah, the "Z" theme is absofriggintutley out of this world weird! I think Keliedescope (SP?) may have something like it...

If it has a cool startup screen... YOU KNOW the OS has to be WONDERFUL
except for the lack of applications...

you might just keep it for simple wordingprocessing tasken like... letters and junk...

Yeah! Imagine sending your g/f a letter you wrote under Copland!!!! I can imagine a MasterCard ad about this....

Power Macintosh 6100: roughly $30
32 megs of extra RAM: Nearly free
1 gig HD: Free
Copland: Free
ClarisWorks 4: Free or very cheap
Sending your girlfriend a letter you wrote under Copland: Priceless.

YAH!

It's just like having rhapsody, or OSX public beta, or the hacked version of any Windows beta... BECAUSE IT'S COOL

I certainly wouldn't mind thinking of running unreleased software on unreleased hardware with unreleased peripherals...

Just think of Copland running on the PiltDownMan (prerelease 6100) it was released... but still is cool

Worse comes to worse, you could use it as a mail server. That is if you don't have a capable little LC III or something that's already serving that purpose

lol, no. Its just that discussing things such as obtaining and installing Copland are topics that the legal eagles over at Apple Legal don't want us talking about.
