I'm looking for a scsi disk repair and/or mounting utility. SCSI Probe sees the disk but can't mount it. Disk Warrior and Norton Disk Doctor don't even see the disk. Anyone have a favorite utility I should know about?

Oldies: FWB Hard-Disk Toolkit, and LaCie's SilverLining are useful for 68K Macs. TechTool might help, too (for a PowerMac).

I haven't been able to mount the drive yet. But I thought all of my failures might be useful to others looking for answers to their scsi problems:

Disk Warrior: Can't see the dirve
TechTool: Can't see the drive
Norton Utilities: Can't see the drive
SCSI Probe: says "Drive not a mountable device"
Mt.Everything: says "Medium error", can't mount
Silverlining: says:"The driver on this disk appears damaged or missing." It crashes if I try to format the disk or replace the driver.
Virtual Lab: says "Drive has no partition map" crashes when it looks for it
Disk Drive TuneUp: says "This drives media must be formatted before drivers or partitiions can be installed on it."
Anubis Plus: says "can't find driver description in block 0"

I'm still searching for copies of FWB Hardisk Toolkit and Data Rescue. I hope this list is helpful to others with problems. Maybe they'll have better luck.

Do any of these utilities report any error sense codes when they try to connect to the drive? If so you might Google about for the interpretation of these sense codes. You could also try APS Powertools, but I suspect that the tools you have tried are the cream of the crop. And, you might check with the manufacturer of the mechanism to see if they have any special utilities to working with the drive (for example, Seagate provides SeaTools).

Given the large number of utilities that can't even see the drive, the situation sounds pretty grim to me. BTW, are you sure it is a Macintosh drive? If the data is important and money is not, then you could try a data recovery service like Drive Savers.

I do sincerely wish you luck, I know how frustrating HD problems can be.

Hmm, I think a few spit out some meaningles numbers, maybe I'll give them another try.
It's a stock drive from a G3 desktop. It worked fine and then I removed it and added a bigger one. The old one booted a few times but crashed when the finder was loading. After a couple of boots, though, I got the blinking question mark. Since then I've been booting off the new drive and trying to work some magic on the old drive. I was very careful when I swapped the drives. I used an antistatic wrist strap. I tried replacing the cables as well, but no luck there either.
thanks for the advice and encouragement.

Mathgeek,

Try this link:

http://www.jagshouse.com/system_6apps.html

At the beginning of the page you'll see "SCSI Tools v2.0u" - see if this will work.

I have downloaded it, so if you have any troubles, I can always e-mail it to you.

Here's another link - this time to HD SC Setup 3.0.1 for AU/X, but I'm not too sure about the converting that is required. The author states that it formats (and therefore finds, I would figure) anything that rotates:
