Again, the fabled ASP database error kept the forums out of action for a few hours this morning, along with 2 or 3 outages at least yesterday.

To me guys, this is just no good. I wonder how many people (potential valuable members) have tried to access the forums over the past couple of months, only to be greeted with the error, then never to return to the site again..

It's time it was sorted..

The biggest challenge is finding the money and labor to relocate and host this site. Perhaps ~Coxy could enlighten us on exactly how much storage and bandwidth is required by the 68kMA, so we could research the costs of alternatives.

I, too, don't like the outages, but considering the price of the service, its a bargain!

I agree that it can become a bit of a headache. I just recently went back to basics at Stryder's Community because of all sorts of problems I was having with another form of the code. The thing with an opensource program is it's never really in a complete commercial form. In trying to add or change features, it's not hard to miss a command in the coding that will wreck havok throughout. ~Coxy works hard on keeping things straight here to provide us with a wonderful place to share ideas. The costs to upkeep it require fundage and I notice when most of these glitches happen, they come when an ad is being placed to help offset that debt. If we could work it out where he can place the ads on an html page that we make sure to click on periodically, that would allow him to replenish his funds without him having to alter the forums themselves. There needs to be a commitment on our part to help. Juggling this place around the rest of his busy life has got to be difficult and frustrating. Complaining isn't helping him or us. Ideas for solutions is what should be coming from us that are appreciative for this site.
Another alternative could be for someone to help provide some webspace for him to beta-test his changes at before making them effective here. I feel some patience and tollerance are due here. It's really not that easy to reconfigure perfectly. That's why the coding is always under development.

IIRC it's mostly litclassics that is having lots of problems... one of the times we were truly in dire trouble, at least it was litclassice

iStill think we need to move to PHPbb or some other sort of non-Mordor$oft based solution.

Money, money, money.
If I got enough member donations to pay for a *proper* host for a year, then we could move.
Firstly, I doubt that that'll ever happen, and secondly, I don't want this place moving to some two-bit service. I can get two-bit service for free.

How much storage do the forums use, and how much bandwidth per month (on average)?

If we know these figures, then us members can at least have a look around at other hosting options.

I might have enough bandwidth and a spare server soon enough to host the thing. I'll get back to you on that.

The storage isn't the problem, really; it's the 3 or so GB per month.

I can piss away 100 GB a month with my provider, so that part's covered. The real question is when I'll have my servers set up, as I'm still renovating the house.
