I've got two machines that are the best Macs I've ever had:

My LCIII - It was my first Mac, and it helped make me the Mac lovin guy I am today

My iMac - That thing helped me make it through Hell (Grade 12) last year. Using it put my mind at rest while the War was going on outside my dorm room. This was also the very computer I would send SOS signals out of my room via email when things really were taking a turn for the worse.

Probably my iMac. It works perfectly and has never failed at anything. I use it daily for word processing, music composition, the Internet, and whatever else needs to be done, and it handles them all. It has never kernel panicked, nor has it given me any hardware problems. In fact, I'm using it right now!

I'd have to say, without any kind of hesitation, that for me, the 7300 and the TiBook have been the best macs.... the CRT iMac has been alot of greif (under classic) and now it's Grandpa's OSX machine....

from what I hear, the 7300 ran OSX pretty well too.... although even as this may be, it runs Mac OS 9.0 very well... I will probably try to recover my OS9.0 CD one of these days, as GoMac was supposed to give this one back eto me

Even when it only had a VGA 640 by 480 monitor, the 7300 was one of the most reliable macs, did everything I wanted to, except when I realised I didn't have a printer or, the first time around, a modem...

this time around, with a 15" MultiScan monitor and an apple keyboard, it's even better.... and now it has 2 hard drives, a 1.2 GB and a 3.2 GB...

this was going to be my classic running PowerPoint presentation Meister.... (refer to the projectors thread)

Every Mac I've ever used as my primary computer has been great.

I would say my current machine -- a 15" flat panel iMac -- is the best, becuase it is the fastest, it never crashes, it looks great, the screen adjusts to my every whim, and it cost less than my previous main Macs (SE FDHD, PB180, PM7300).

My upgraded 9600 was my fave Mac.
9600 G3 480 1Mb cache. 64 MB Voodoo 5, Wired 4DVD decoder, USB card, VST Dual Channel IDE card. 450+ MB of interleaved RAM. 18.2 GIG SCSI boot Disk, 40 GIG IDE app and game disk. Pioneer DVD drive and SONY 24x internal burner.

Unfortunately we are now seperated but he went to a good home and is well looked after. i've kept the best of the upgrade though, I'm saving them for the day when I buy another 9600!

Apart from that my Cube which replaced it has been has been great, I really need to replace the flakey 512 MB Dimm though. Even then I've had very few KP's in the 6 or so months I've had it. My g/fs iMac hasn't crashed once in the same amount of time though.

I couldn't finish without a 68k mac! My perforama 630 was the first Mac I actually owned (I've been using them for much longer though). My dad and I went 50/50 and over the years it's been pretty much maxed out with a TV tuner ethernet and AV card and 56 MB of RAM. It still serves as a useful machine today. My sister now uses it with photoshop 3 for art college.

If I had to choose one it'd be the 9600 though.

Best Mac I've ever had??? Tough choice. I think I'll have to say my PB 520c, even though it doesn't ever seem to work the way I really want it to, I stay focused when I use it, and my mind doesn't wander fof. I think it may have something to do with having no screen space to utilize. I'm using it to write my movie now. It's good for my movie writing it seems....

Well it has to be my 840av..........

I've had st, pc & mac.

The Quadra is the best because it is the most reliable.

The st was more familiar to me & so appeared friendlier, but just wasn't up to the task spec wise.
The pc promised to do alot but I just had crash after crash.

Every day I go into my computer room & check my email & surf a little & every day my 840av does the job.

It is not perfect, & like yesterday I had ethernet working, I havn't conciously changed any settings, but today it wont work!

It isnt the master of the universe, but it does the basics for me.

My Performa 400 was worse than my st
The Quadra 650 is doing well & is looking to make itself a permanent home.

I love my PSOne, not cos it's the best but I don't have to spend loads upgrading it & again it does the job I need it to.

My old Mac II was the best Mac that I ever owned. Bought back in fall of 1987, I used it fulltime for nearly 7 years. I took it to work with me and infected the company that I worked for (they started buying Macs for other people). It started out with only 1 MB RAM, then got another 1 MB, then was pushed to 5MB and finally had 8 MB at retirement. The 40 MB HD (a 5 1/4 half-height monster) filled up and developed stiction, so it was replaced with a new fast 200 MB HD (which cost $1600 at the time!).

I still fondly remember the start-up chime of the Mac II -- it sounded so much bigger and more "sophisticated" than the simple BONG of the older macs.

I have 3 I'm quite attached to. The first is the 8100, the mac I owned before any others. I only used it as a main machine for under a year, but it was my introduction to messing about with the mac world. I used to use macs in pre-press at my sister's place and my work, but never had a chance to really break the OS in the way that let me see how it all worked. It's still doing its thing too, as my fileserver now.

The next of course, is the Quadra 605 I use as my everything-linux-server. It does a bit of everything and just sits there turned on all the time. Never crashes, and handles what I throw as it. *snif*. I love reliability.

And last - the machine I use as my main box, the Jaguar-powered indigo iMac 400. It's the fastest one I own, and apart from doing -everything- I need, it too is rock solid.

The rest - they're all neat playthings. Sometimes I wish I had the room & need to get more of them working in the background constantly...

MicroQuadra ServerFarm?

I've always wanted a.....
I've always wanted an 8600... that would be really fun, get a HUGE apple monitor with the AV and play playstation and do all the other junk like that....

really a "workstation" type of mac....

7300 is still one of my all around general purpose favorites though...

Yes, I use a 8600/250 with 128 MB RAM and 3x4 GB HD as my "standard" Mac. Together with a 20" Apple Multiscan and the Apple Desktop Powered Speakers it is my favorite. (The children can play with the two iMac/350's).

It wasn't apple that made them crashy it was that they added all those 3rd party features into the os that made it crashey.

well really, what happens is that OS9 runs best on non-USB macs... it's all the newer hardware that makes OS9 bad (IMHO)

My LCIII was the greatest computer on earth, back when I bought it new in 1993 or around then. I could do things with it that would cause my PC using friends to stare in open-jaw disbelief. After that, the greatest Mac I owned was the PowerMac 8500. Its expandability kept it my main Mac up until last year, when I replaced it with a massively upgraded Beige G3 and a new 17" G4 iMac. Of those, the iMac looks like it will win the next "best Mac" award from me.

Honorable Mention: The venerable SE/30.

It was nice for the few days i had it on the iMac (I got it second hand in 2000 and one of the first things i did to the imac was upgrade it to OS 9), but it was absolutely shocking on the PB1400. Dunno why, but in my experience, Mac OS 8.6 just really doesn't like PowerBook 1400s.

I still love my colour classic. But for ease of use screen wise, I prefer using my LC-475's. No complications, no sweat. They never seem to miss a beat.

that's the way I feel about my 7300, always it will be there for me to fall back onto.... I hope to get the bugger set up one of these days... no matter how much my dad says "there's not enough room" I'm sure that there is...

I'll have to make that vertical stand for it and sit it on the ground under a small desk or something like that

That's the other thing I love... those Apple Desktop Bus Mouse II things NEVER die completely... I just today had a MS balled mouse die... and I need to get a new mouse for my PowerBook.... I'm thinking about a cheap Logitech Optical Scroll mouse

The LC III was my all time favourite Mac, though I didn't own one when it was new. At the time I had an accelerated SE with a 16Mhz 68000 card. I even ran MacTCP with PPP on it using Mosaic. That was in 1991-92. <sigh> Those were the days.

My 020-accelerated SE, bought used in 1987; still running System 6.0.8. Don't use it now, but it occupies an honored place next to my similarly ancient QMS Jet+ laser printer, which still works fine via LocalTalk. There's nothing I couldn't do on that SE, except for color work (it was before the Web and e-mail exploded)--with Berkeley's wonderful Stepping Out utility, the 9" screen became a virtual monitor of any size.

All the ones I've owned have been my favorite.

I love the powered subwoofer in the 6400/180.

I love the LCIII because it's so small and perfect for a mail server.

I love the 631CD because you can plug in a full 68040 in there and it still works even after a cat peed in it.

Then there's the 7600/233 that's got the "fast" video card and AV inputs. It even plays MacQuake pretty well. OS9 even runs really stable on it. I guess from not having USB?

The only one I didn't really like was the 5200CD. It's still pretty good for teaching my mom how to use a computer, though. And it can display 800x600 @75Hz. Such a waste.

Then there's the Beige G3 motherboard that's just sitting in my bedroom waiting for a processor. Poor little thing. I love that one, too.

quote:

Sounds like good protection in case of bombing raids.
quote:
I just today had a MS balled mouse die...

Yeah. Those things had really crappy construction. They didn't even bother to deflux the circuit board. That's what kills them a lot of times, I think. All the dirt that gets in there just sticks to the flux and messes everything up. Same thing witht the voltage regulators on the beige G3's.
