Isn't there some very basic support for the iMac's video chipset? I know they added some support for the beige G3's. To be honest however I don't see Apple taking this one seriously

ya, there is, it is called a generic driver. There is no real hardware specific driver for the trayloaders, the Beiges, and the PBG3s, and thus they are forced to use the (crappy, but compatable with almost everything) generic driver.

at least it tries to install the generic VIDEO driver for unsupported cards, in Win98, I added a second video card, and it installed the mouse driver!!!

Umm...

The video in those iMacs is just an ATI Rage 128 chipset compounded to the mobo.

same as is in my PCI G4, without the DVD decoder.

[edit]
I will say that I beleive that to be the case. It may be a different ATI chipset, like a Rage Mobile.

BUT, I'll also say that Generic = GOOD. Generic doesn't mean "less capable". What can the chipset DO that the drivers don't enable/control?

I have a "generic" modem... US Robotics 56k. It's as generic as you can get. repsonds to pure blooded Hayes Modem INIT codes. also happens to be one of the best modems you can buy, and that genericness is a good contributor to that.

I signed, partially because the graphics *could* be smoother... although I think that otherwise, it still makes a decent using platformness
