OK, I am getting an iMac (bondi blue), ethier 233 or 266 (I think)

It may have a mezz. slot, which would make it a 233.

if it does have said mezz. slot, what can I toss in there?

what other upgrade paths can I follow to make it faster?

I heard that MCE made a CDRW for the trayloader series, is this true?
well,
TIA

If it has a Mezz slot, you can put in a GameWizard. It will speed up some older games, but its not worth it if you're going to play modern games or run X, as its not supported these days.

I think that I will put an MCE CDRW into it, and also a sonnet 600mHz/FireWire proccie upgrade once I get the cash. I may also put a SCSI card or tvtuner/SCSI/svideo card (supposedly made by Formac) into it, and turn it into a serious machine.

well, that is all for now.

If you're going to run OS X I don't think any mezzanine cards are supported. i though the 266 had a mezanine slot aswell. I think on some later models, maybe up to rev C they kept the slot but the onl way to access it was to cut a hole in the case.

How much is that proc/firewire upgrade anyway? I wouldn't be surprised if for the cost of the upgrade + what you'd get for selling the iMac you could buy a better machine, maybe a blue and white G3.

OK I just checked out the cost of the upgrade and you can get a B/W for the same price or less. When the time comes hack your iMac in to a 1U case or a large instrument case and use the B/W as your main machine, or sell the iMac and get the B/W for half price.

The upgrades are a tough choice. It looks like you already have enough Macs with SCSI though so it really comes down to a TV tuner or VooDoo 2. Personally I'd go for the voodoo 2 which would give the iMac a serious kick regarding games. OWC had them for 50 USD a few months ago although a guy was selling a shed load on eBay for about 30 USD around the same time. Although it wouldn't work in OS X you could just boot in to OS 9 for games.

Also if I'm right and you get the 266 which doesn't have a visible mezzanine slot but does have one inside you could still fit the voodoo 2 as it has no external connectors IIRC, all you'd have to do is pop off the blanking plate to make it fit.

You could also OC it you could almost certainly get 300 MHz out of it.

Anyway In the mean time just enjoy your it

Actually, the iMac 266 and iMac 333 don't have a Mezzinine slot. They just have the solder pads for one. And I know, because i've taken off the cover plate where the ports are to have a look.

yeah the mezanning slot stopped at the 233 because Apple didn't like people using it....

which brings me to my next question, why do I have not known of 3rd party people developing cards for OTHER proprietary apple slots, like the LC/perf VidSlots

With the cutesy games Apple played switching signals and addressing around in the supposedly standardized slots like the LC3 PDS they used in 68030->04->PPC Performas, it's a wonder any any third party cards were ever developed at all!

The theory about providing expansion options sounds good in the magazine articles, the ads and even in the developer notes, but somehow, I really don't think Apple ever had their hearts in it. There's almost no power or cooling resources available to do anything useful in performas. When it comes to iMacs, they didn't provide enough cooling budget for the hardware itself to have a long and useful lifetime to begin with!

Btw, did anyone ever end up utilising the extra pins on the extended LC PDS? All the LC PDS cards i've seen are just the standard 96 (or is that 64? I'm too drunk to remember. ) pin LC/LCII boards.
