Well I got a few bits & bobs. All I've had from the mac all day is, there is no disk in the drive, There is a problem with the disk, There is a problem with ethernet, There was a problem with the hard drive, there was an error no. 1,067(????????????). I just give up. I tried using ethernet between my Quadra 650 & my Quadra 840av, but it kept not working, the worst thing was it kept changing my apple talk to "local talk" instead of ethernet, everytime it did this it felt that I should have my printer connected to my modem port & it also kept changing my printer type from 1200 to 1500. I was hoping to use ethernet between my Quadra 840av & a powermac 8100/110, but on the evidence of today I may as well just flog the cables. I am going to get rid of everything I think & use my cdr to transfer between machines. I have cleared alot off my 4.23 gig hard drive & have 790 MB or so so I can fit it onto a cdr I think. The ethernet cabling will stay in my possesion until I get the 8100/110, I shall try to connect my ethernet network, fail & then flog them.:-< Apple os is the most downright rudest computer interaction I have encountered, there is no "oh I found that difficult perhaps try this" all I get is, I can't do it, you will fail, hey did jobs have a thing for Marvin the Paranoid andriod? shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

Apart from the PRAM battery here's another handy hint for when it's working. In the Appletalk control panel change user mode to administrator and you can lock the settings (with the little padalock icon) you don't have to set a password. When you've locked the Appletalk setting to ethernet swap back to basic user mode. It seems to help keep things in place. Also are you 100% certain it's a crossover cable? I had some simillar problems a few years ago and it turned out the shop had sold me a regular ethernet cable. Amatuer computer tech/sales people seem to have selective hearing and block out the words cross over. They're more interested in getting the money out of your pockets and you out of the shop before you show them up. -------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |

I am much calmer now, my 840av communicated with my 650 via ethernet, funny thing is I burnt a cdr, which only my 840av can read(I burnt cdr of 840av hard drive to transfer to 650), my 840av can only read it on its internal cd drive, not even can the cdr be read on the cd recorder that burnt it:-/ now my hard drive(4.23 gig) that I wanted to get info off'of & onto my 650 decided to have an error(this drive has been fine up til now) & so I had to reformat it, so it is very lucky that I had burnt a cdr of it's contents!!!!!!! I tried to boot my pram but the wife had a cow which totally wrecked the pram man. well I did alt(command?), apple(option?) & p & r & I got 2 chimes & then my computer started & forgot all the memory things & it didn't ask me or let me check the desktop, appletalk or anything. It looks like I have 5 metres of cat 5 ethernet cable, but it's not crossover but I may be selling it. shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

The 650's drive may very well be too old to support CD-RW, and maybe even CD-R, due to reflectivity differences in the newer media formats..jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

Your burner is external isn't it? If so just hook it up to the 650 so it can read the CD. If it's isn't just pop the lid off the 650 hook up the drive, just rest it on top don't bother installing it properly so it can read the one CD. It'll be 10x faster than transferring everything by ethernet, actually maybe not depending on the speed of your CD drive.-------- LC 2, LC 3, Q605, Perf 638, Colour Classic (160 603e) 6100, 7200, PTP 225 (Quad 604), PM 9600, G4 Cube |

Yeah I think it should be ok, but if I put in my 8.1 sytem disk cd(backed up hard drive a while ago), it reads it, but if I boot the machine with 8.1 system disk it brings up a message that it cant use the disk, I click ok & then can use the disk just fine. It has certainly been playing a few music cdr's that I made. shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |
