I have Power Book 520 coming in that I would really like to put a full 040 on. From the research I have done I need a MC68040FE25A. Which is a 184-pin cqfp package. Now the hard part is finding the chip. One solution that I have found that some of the amigas might have one, But I have no idea which one. Anyone have any idea what hardware might have one that I could pull it off of?

DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE
-----------------------
Motorola is pleased to announce the introduction of a new 0.57
micron mask revision for the MC68040 product line. The new mask
revision, K63H, is fabricated at Tohoku Semiconductor Corporation
(TSC8), a Motorola subcontractor fabrication facility in Japan.
The K63H mask revision (MC68040 Rev. A, i.e. MC68040FE25A) is
designed to replace the 0.65 micron E42K (non-rev 68040, i.e.
MC68040FE25) mask revision
formerly manufactured in the MOS11 fabrication facility in Austin,
TX.

The Rev. A MC68040 is a drop-in replacement for the non-rev MC68040.

This means that no circuit board modifications are necessary if
converting from non-rev to Rev. A.
Please consult the Motorola MC68040 web site for the most recent
MC68040 device data, and MC68040 Frequently Asked Questions:

http://www.mot.com/SPS/HPESD/prod/0X0/

MC68040 product built with the Rev. A mask, K63H, will have an "A"
suffix at the end of the device number (MC68040FE25A), as opposed to
the no-suffix for E42K non-rev mask product (MC68040FE25). Also,
the device marking will contain "0K63H" as the mask revision. All
other marking on the device will
remain unchanged.
Please consult your local Motorola Sales Office or local Distributor
for samples.

To order samples, order:

i don't know if this is possible, but could you put the plug in chip (can't think of real name for the life of me right now) in there if you somehow managed to get the socket (socket mount processors maybe is the name?) soldered on the daughtercard or something to get a full 040?

CQFP->PGA adapters are quite expensive, LARGE and the PGA versions of the chip are power hogs (different voltage requirement too?)

while we're at it we could ask JT and all about the advantages of a 68060 type processor... I'm sure that Shaktiman and another can duke it out about why a 060 nwould be good for our Quadras.....then... yeah

Thats what the stupid A means. I figured that A was just a rev number. I knew as long it did not have a V in the part number nothing after the FE mattered. V means that it is a 3.3 volt 68LC040. All though it sounds a A rev would be preferable as it is a smaller micron process. It should help with heat issues.

I may have line on one, but I am waiting to see the priceing or how many I will have to buy.

I agree mots site does suck. Took me 30 minutes to find the 040 data sheet. The only thing worse there website is calling them.

I tought of making a cqfp to pga adapter, but short of building a whole new cpu module I dont see a way to make it fit.
disclamer- I dont have the laptop yet, it is in the mail, but from the pics I looked at theres not much free space

Get the service manuals for the 500 series and look at the exploded diagrams and the ppc upgrade installation manual. Also, email alien, he's the one who has done this kind of thing. In Q 1-10, the CQFP-> PGA pins adapter I found and checked out for the 2300c 603e->1400c CPU card interface->G3 card hack is about $400!

find a friend with an electronics lab, that has a de-integration device that'll remove the chip w/o making a whole hell of a mess of the daughtercard, and then reintegrate the QFP full '040 onto it.

you can also call up Japan, and get a proccie card out of a dead 550c, or the full-on 550c for that matter :)

I like that Amiga idea... But I wouldn't know which type of CPU they used. Only the highest-end ones used '040's and they are still sold at a premium. I think the price of a sample 68040 from Motorola is about $250, from a discussion on the LEM PowerBooks list a while ago.

Also, you may want to consider getting a 40 MHz rated CPU while you're at it, you can overclock the 520 to at least 40 MHz, maybe even more (45 MHz has been reported possible).

I got the laptop today, but its not a 520, its a 540.

I thought of tracking down a 550 cpu card also.

I checked with Mot and to get a single chip will run about $200. I did find a place that has them, but they have a $100 min. My plan is try to find a piece of hardware that has one on it.

A place I worked for a while had stacks of them in old stock. They were used in custom-built industrial controllers.

The thing is, you pretty much want a new chip. Unsoldering these things without destroying them is a real bitch.

I wonder how well ChipQuick (?) would work for desoldering an IC for reuse? MadDog over at 'fritter said it worked great for removing the 603e from his Duo 2300c, but his intention was to replace it with a faster CPU.

How many comrades would need to chip in to make up a $100 order? What's the per unit cost?
