Anyone know anything about those old Apple Quicktake Cameras? I've noticed on ebay that the Quicktake 200 sells for considerable more than the 100 or 150. Is that just because of the LCD it has or does it have more memory or better picture quality?mathgeek 68K Macs Liberated: LC, Performa 636, Mac Classic II My Powerbook 1400 page http://www.its.caltech.edu/~dgoulet/1400 |

The QT 200, A.K.A. the Fuji DS-7, was one of the first consumer digicams on the market to have nicities like an LCD, removable media, analog video output, semi-manual focus and lens options and relatively good resolution (if only at 640x480). They also make nifty webcams!Despite all this, the premium paid for them on eBay and other venues is mostly for the collectable value. Hell, you can get a digital camera with identical or even superior specs for $50 retail. If you do get a QT200, be aware beforehand that you need to use AA sized Silver-Nitrate batteries. You'll be tempted to use alkalines, but they won't work. The camera might come on for a few seconds with alkalines, but then it will shut down. You can find Silver-Nitrate batteries, but they're a little more expensive than Alkalines. Knowing this could have saved a friend of mine a lot of frustration, until we discovered that it's not really alkaline-friendly.Also, I have to second the opinion that any el-cheapo modern digital camera will blow away a QT200. I think 1 megapixel cameras are down to around $100, 2 megapixels is around $200, and 3 megapixels is around $320 nowdays. I couldn't honestly justify recommending someone get a QT200 unless it were practically free. Even moreso with the QT100 and 150, which are so basic as to be practically worthless. The cheesy 640 x 480 stills that my digital video camera takes blow away any QT150.

The QT 200 is probably the best that uses the Mac serial port...other than it, all you have are the mimics (Fuji DS-7, Kenox SSC-350N) the older QT's and various Mac webcams.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hardware Page: http://cineware.sytes.net |

actually, the QT200 is a mimic of the DS-7, not the other way around, though the QT200 looks better.I still like the styling of the 1x0 quicktakes. Kyocera did a good job on 'em, pity they suck. anyway. just my sleepy rambling drivel, trying hard to distract myself from the fact my arse hurts from sitting. hehehe... I'd LOVE a QT200...lots of the ones that go on eBay, per what I've seen actually have the boxes, loads of software, extra batteries and even extra flash cards and whatnot... THIS is a pretty good deal I'd say... almost bought one on more than one occasion, ending only in PAF matters.... my dream mac setup, as always includes an extra serial PCi card and a QuickTake 200 connected to an 8600... thanks for the tip. I found a good one on ebay. A lot of the other models were either crappy (like the .3 megapixel quicktake 200 with no flash) or mysteriously overpriced ($150 for a 1 megapixel camera that uses floppies sounds a bit high doesn't it?). The 1.3 megapixel DC120's go for about $75 with AC adapter. thanks again mathgeek 68K Macs Liberated: LC, Performa 636, Mac Classic II My Powerbook 1400 page http://www.its.caltech.edu/~dgoulet/1400 |
