There's constantly a debate going on over which browser is best for 68k's.

I've had enough.

I'm going to figure this out once and for all. Once I find a free minute from school, that is. Blegh.

I have a Q660av and a Q840av that I can use for my test. Depending on my level of committment, I can also test an LCIII I'm going to pick about 5 or 10 popular websites and clock their load times, plus record any display or crash problems I find. I'll post the results on my new website. I suppose we could also add the info the the official 68K MLA website for easy reference. People would probably like to know what sort of browser would best suit their mac (the 660av and 840av have a good speed difference, so you can probably get an idea of how efficient a trade-off it would be to use one of the more full-featured browsers)

The browsers to be tested:
-IE 2.01/2.1, 3.01, 4.01
-Netscape 2.02, 3.04, 4.08
-iCab 2.9 (current version - others are expired)
-Latest version of Mosaic I can get and maybe one before
-Maclynx 2.7.1
-I don't think Opera 68k is out yet

I got this list from Gamba. Any other suggestions? Should I axe any of these immediately because they aren't worth testing?

Here are the testing configurations:
Q660av - 32 mb ram - 7.6.1 (I like 7.1 better but had to upgrade. Maybe I can switch back for the test) - OT 1.1.1
Q840av - about 64 mb ram (I forget) will have 8.1 - OT 1.3
LCIII - about 20 mb ram - 7.6.1 - OT 1.1.1

Give me your thoughts. If anyone wants to do it on another system (how about doing me a favor w/ the LC?) we can work together. What sites should I test? I'm thinking of doing a google search, apple.com, and MyYahoo. Suggestions?

Oh, what about a name for the project? "The 680x0 Browser Surf-Off?"

It's a great idea,

Perhaps a bit too much for 1 person?

Hows about a website with a form, or just where people can put thier resuls, ala the clock chipping website. Otherwise it is just your own personal test with your preferences & with your machines.

It really would be a good thing, I had trouble before I found a stable browser.

iCab is up to 2.9.1 now, and I have less crashing with it than 2.9.0.
Forget MacLynx, it's too unstable, replace it with WannaBe, get it here:

Very stable text-only web browser. Love it. Also comes in PPC flavor.

I also like the idea of a general forum where we can all post our results with various browsers on various 68K hardware.
