Ok, so i went to the Coke machine th is morning for a Coke, and put my money in. For some reason, it wouldn't take one of my $1 coins. I then realise its a bit smaller than another $1 coin i had next to it. I then turn it over.......and realise it says "NEW ZEALAND" on the back!!!! Grrrr! How are these things getting mixed up with other stuff, and why do Coke machines have to be so anal???

the machine probably couldn't handle doing the currency conversion

you have to admit that it makes more sense to have a one dollar coin smaller in size than a two dollar coin. And it works both ways too. Damn Aussie $1 coins don't fit in NZ coke machines either heh heh, I guess you can work out which side of the Tasman I'm originally from. And don't get me started on the monopoly money notes... that crazy 50 cent piece.....

HAR!!!

You are almost as bad as canada, where you have to wear a belt for the sheer reason that your pants'll fall down from the weight of coinage if you dont!

on the plus side, you empty your pockets at the end of the day, and discover you are rich

I bought a NZ$ 2 coin at a Tokyo flea market for 50 Yen. Based on the exchange rates then and now, I will nearly triple my investment. Now if I could just spring for the airfare to Auckland, I could reap my profit from it.

Here is the States, they keep trying to foist $1 coins on us. Apparently, its cheaper for the Treasury to make coins that last for decades, than to print dollar bills all the time. The govt is on its third attempt at a dollar coin and nobody wants to use them.

That's because the US Govt hasn't figured out that you can't make a dollar coin the size of a freaking quarter.

Coloring it goldish is a step in the right direction. All they need to do now is make it the size of a 1/2 dollar piece.

actually, the best thing they could do is make it the size of an old Morgan silver dollar (USA, i mean) its bigger than even the JFK half-dollars...

i have a morgan dollar from 1900

they should make dollar coins that don't fit down my throat... then I'd be willing to use them (maybe a bit smaller than the old 50 cent pieces though)

Get rid of the US $1 Bill!!

Bills cost MUCH more to use over time... the life expectency of a coin is much much longer, meaning it costs less to use coins.

The $1 coin (silver AND gold) are heavier than quarters, thicker. This is good. In fact, they have the same electrical qualities (this is why they work in many vending machienes)

Personally, I say get rid of the $5 bill too. Having been to Scotland, South Africa, China, and Hong Kong (pre 1997)... The more coins on the bottom end, the better!

we could adopt the Euro?

it'd be a good excuse for apple to have to replace all of our keybaords for FREEE!!!!! (.ME would keep his replacements as spares and just know the key combo to use on his first 'board)

They tried that with the Eisenhower dollar coins in 1971 to 1978 -- it didn't work.

Replacing both the $1 and $5 dollar bill would also redress the unfairness of Lincoln and Washington getting to be on both a coin and a bill.

Of course the real solution is to get rid of cash entirely - going to smart money cards or cellphone payment systems. In some Scandanavian locations, you can use your cell phone at a vending machines (and parking meters) -- just call the machine and press the button. And in Hong Kong, I saw a guy paying at a convenience store with his cell phone.

Either that or we should all go back to the gold standard - carrying around all our money in the form of gold necklaces that we disassemble link by link to pay for stuff. Lets hear it for REAL money!

Of course, I'm sure that Bill Gates has a plan to standardize the world on Microsoft money.

Yes, this is really cool! Some machines in Finland can do this. Telephone the number on the front of the machine and add the appropriate extension (eg +1 for Coke, +2 for 7up etc). The price of the can is then added to your phone bill.

Beats not having the correct change!Go to Top of Page

Has anyone here in Australia tried to use one of those legal tender specail edition 200 dollar coins they sometimes release in a vending machine. Or for that matter a store.

Ofcourse, anyone to pay 500 dollars for a coin worth 200 dollars is less than the full dollar in the head :)
