...and it turned out good! I got an Apple Color One Scanner 1200/30 for $4.

YES, FOUR DOLLARS!!!!

They told me it worked, but I shall soon find out whether it does or not once I have it connected to my 840av. Whee!

They also had a couple other neat things there, namely a Performa 61xxCD with a 700MB hard drive and a Power Computing PowerCenter 150 with no RAM or hard drive (just the CD-ROM and floppy drive). They wanted $30+ for each, though, so I passed on them. I would consider going back for the PC-150, as even $35 isnt bad for a PCI/G3-upgradable PPC, but I don't feel like scrounging RAM for it. If anybody in the L.A. area (Clinton? Mathgeek?) wants to nab it, it's at the Disable Veterans Thrift Store on San Fernando and Sonora in Glendale.

Oh yeah, they also had an Apple LaserWriter Select 360 that they wanted $13 for! That's a 600 DPI PS-compat. printer there...though who knows if it worked or not. I might just go back for that one myself...

The Laserwriter Select 360 is a very nice networkable printer. The cartridges are a bit expensive (about $100 retail, cheaper on the web), but you'll get about 4000 pages per cartridge. I'd definitely buy it if you need to print lots of text documents.

I didn't check out the printer thoroughly, although it did have a full stack of paper in it (three-hole-punched, at that). I wasn't terrible interested mostly because it doesn't have onboard ethernet, which I would really like to have to be able to network it through my router.

All you need is a bridge between ethernet and phonenet, and then you will be able to have all of your old Macs talk to your new Macs (plus having localtalk printers like the 360 accessible via ethernet). I use a Farallon iPrint, but an old Mac with an ethernet port and the proper software could also act as a bridge. The only thing that I have not been able to do is to access my broadband internet connection using phonenet on my older Macs.

BTW, cinemo, nice find with that scanner!

BTW, you can do a quickie test of the Laserwriter 360 at that shop by setting the little push-button selector switch in the back to "4" and then turning the printer on. It should automatically print a configuration and info page after it powers up.

Happy hunting,

Local talk bridge is in the old networking section at apple .com it turns any open serial port on a etherneted mac into a bridge for phonenet.

hehehehe... I still have yet to own a functional mac printer... I should probably go with an ethernet or USB one for functionality with the 2 "main macs" TiBook and soonly the imac....

I picked up a LWS360 recently for $40. My wife works on the Dark Side, so we needed a printer that'd work with both platforms, and I couldn't get her XP machine to see my Epson 740 (USB-connected to a Yikes G4, X.2.4). So I got this 360 and put a $55 (new) ethernet print server on its parallel port. Works great for both of us. Got it at outpost.com. And once I get my Plus to boot, I'll be able to print from that, too. I dream of sugar-plum fairies and SCSI-to-ethernet connectors--hint, hint. I suppose that I could get a serial-to-ethernet, but I'd rather be difficult.

You may not need to get an ethernet adaptor for the Plus to get it to print. The 360 can connect to different computers on its different ports at the same time. The manual even say you can use all three (Localtalk, serial, and parallel) at the same time. So, while all of the ethernetted machines print via the ethernet-to-parallel connection, your Plus Duo230/DuoDock II, PB140, IIci, etc. could print via a localtalk network connection.

Happy printing,
