My new 650 is here! yippie:-)It has 100 meg, which I have just upgraded so fingers crossed It now has 136 meg. The cpu in the 650 is socketed as is the cpu in my old dead 840, can I swap the cpu's to give me a 650 running @ 40 Mhz? The 650 came with:- 500 meg hard drive floppy drive external cd-rom I want to have:- 500 meg hard drive 80 meg hard drive cd-rom drive The first problem I noticed which is not too desperate is that the cd audio in plug on the motherboard is diagonally opposite the cd drive:-/ & the only audi cable's I have are only about 4cm long. The next problem is that there are two connectors for hard drive power, & I need three. shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

Is it a Centris 650, or a Quadra? From memory, the Centris has a bus speed of 25MHz, and the Quadra is 33MHz. Dropping a 40MHz processor in there won't speed things up on it's own (unfortunately ) - you need to increase the bus to match.- - - - - - - - - - - - - A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation. 68k ParaMedic |

I am typing this from my Quadra 650.How do I measure the speed of the cpu? I think the seller quoted 25Mhz, If I put my old 840's cpu in that would put it up to 33Mhz? shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

The Quadra 650 has a 33mhz 68040. As Flash says, if you put a 40mhz 040 in there it will run at 33mhz.You can clip a few resistors and run it 40mhz, but your serial ports will not work. You can do a modification to sort this however. Search Googles newsgroup archive for 'Quadra 650 40mhz'. Also, ideally your RAM should be in interleaved pairs for best performance. |

shak, you should take a look at the Clock Chipping Homepage http://homepage.mac.com/schrier/mhz.htmlAs for testing the speed of your Mac, there's lots of utilities around but only a couple of good ones (some of them just read the gestalt ID of the Mac and reference the processor speed via an internal database rather than actually testing/analysing the system bus) My recommendations are: TechTool v1.1.9 (or TechTool Pro) and Clockometer which is part of the "Gauge Series" utilities from Newer Technology. Also, looking at the processor.... *cracks the lid of the closest Q605* ... the main number you are looking for will read something like XC68LC040RC25B The important bits of the number are the processor type, in this case 68LC040, and the 'LC' means that the chip doesn't have a Floating Point Unit (math co-processor)....if you didn't know that already. The 25 at the end is the processor speed I.E. 25mHz - - - - - - - - - - - - - A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but it sure beats a blank stare for starting a conversation. 68k ParaMedic |

I am informed by Apple System Profiler, that I have a Quadra 650 running at 33 MHz & my machine id is 36. I have been reading the clock chipping page(thanks for the link), but am unsure as to how I can proceed. Can I clip a resistor & have a 40MHz Quadra 650 or will I need to do some soldering(shak panics at soldering). Also my cd drive sits askew/wonky so I will need to find a couple of things(cant think what they are called) from my old compaq pc but also I need a new front bezel, I am guessing that only a 7100 front cd bezel will fit, is this right? shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

1. Yes, you will probably need to do some soldering.2. Yes, a 7100 tray loader bezel will fit on the 650 case. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7
