I thought of something today.... if given the chance... what PC manufacturer would you kill? any one of them.... is there one that just deserves to die? like the product not the people? like the people not the product? do you just HATE that logo? Personally, I'd kill "the new HP" everything that HP does except maybe high end MIPS stuff and their imaging products....... Compaq is cool though..... I like compaq's older stuff Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide |

Well, I can't stand Window's machines at all.... That's why I'm using one right now. But seriously, I find them a pain to use. I'd take out all but Dell, the only PC manufacturer that seems to make halfway decent systems pre-built. But if you want to know who would be first to go, the winners would be (compaq) and (Gateway)________________ foetoid, that's (fee-toy-duh) http://www.foetoid.doesntexist.com Edited by - foetoid on 04 Mar 2003 20:46:17 |

Actually, I'd kill Dell first, because when you call tech support, you almost always get some guy from India who knows more about carrying computers on his head. Then, they expect you to diagnose and troubleshoot your computer yourself with the "guidance" of a Dell support person over the phone instead of having the option of taking them to a repair center like a good computer manufacturer should. |

Hmm... Actually, I can live with Dell. They are one of the few manufacturers with notebook service manuals on line (better than Apple in that regard) and will still stock parts for older systems. My only gripe with them was that it took two tries to fix my (work) Inspiron 3700. Compaq is a pain because everything is/was a bit *too* proprietary (though probably no worse than Apple in that regard). My least favorite is Acer. As little info as possible online; hard to find parts for older systems; and a much smaller third-party support network. <<<john>>> <<<john>>> |

um, errrjeez like didnt Apple win out over Atari? Didn't windoze win out over Apple? I thought we lived in a free market. well if we had the power to kill pc manafacturers........... Worst thing for me was I had a pc. I was too scared too be bothered to upgrade it. When I decided to turn to Apple I thought lets just try to upgrade the pc too see how hard it really can be. I got some memory & a very friendly guy over ebay who said he would give technical support, so I got the ram & plugged it in............ 5 days later & as many different configurations/options & sod all cos my pc just wouldn't boot with the new memory & the "friendly" ebay guy wasn't so friendly anymore. shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

Muhaz!A double post! I havn't had one (two?) of those since, the 68060 upgrade posts. Incidentally the 68060 upgrade is entirley possible, but because Apple had a falling out with Motorola(Motorola were slow to release the 68060, personally I say you cant blame Apple they needed to compete). What we need to do is to patch the rom. For us 68k users it may well be not worth our while as all we would feasabily get would be the added speed because old 68k mac programs were/are optimized for 68040 code, still there are a few programs still supporting 68k mac & such as Opera is planning to develop for 68k mac so if these people could work with 68060 machines then this would be good. erm & patch mac os as well I think so Apple would need to free the source for os 8.1. shaktiman Quadra 840av, prettymuchmaxedout8xcd drive,3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 , 12 meg ram, 500 meg hard drive Performa400(asleepintheattick) |

incidentally... I ran my compaq machine with NT4...personally thought, there was nothing wrong with the hardware on my gateway, dells are supercheap and compaqs in the golden era before being eaten were great machines... for the most part anyway... all but the presarios I'd say... and even some of those were cool IPEX of course, MacLover5 is the most evil of the australian companies.... I've had an acer and I think that it was really nice in it's styling and the way that they integrated thing.... as an NT4 workstation, it was acceptably fast, and with a processor upgrade, it ran BeOS well even... this however goes without saying that BeOS had none of the drivers, and seldom NT 4 could find sound and modem drivers.... although for some reason the system wouldn't work without the silly sound card on the bottom... I had some plans for that machine... if we didn't have to move, I may have by now had a wonderfully set up machine acting as an NT workstation, even on a domain that IS one ofmy other talents BTW, I have successfully been able to set up an NT domain.... As for Cory's guess as to which one i think should die, yes, he is right. But why do you guys hate Dell so much? IMHO, they are the best big PC manufacturer around. This Dimension 2350 absoulutely rocks, and the only bad thing about it other than the ***** graphics card is that it doesn't run Mac OS. Other than that, it rocks, and the graphics card problem can easily be fixed by sliding in a new ATI Radeon 9000. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7

Gateway and Emachines can die (and they probably will). I have fixed way to many of them recently. They eat power supplies, Hard drives, and I have seen several motherboards that plain went up in smoke for no apparent reason. Most of them have the hard drives mounted vertically, which kills the spindle bearings. I'd agree with maclover about Dell not being half bad. They are decently reliable (hardware), and usually pretty solid machines. Whereas Gateways and ComCraps, er, Paqs, are feces in a brown cardboard box. Its amazing how much stuff in my friends gateway is propriatary crud that just breaks.~The Penguin **| Want free 68kmla email? Yes. I still remember how amazed i was when i saw all that proprietry crap in a Compaq that one of my friends has. Ick. No room for expandability, either. This Dell isn't all that expandable, but at least it uses standard components that aren't a PITA! Plus, IIRC, it has a real modem, too. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7 Edited to remove sexual remark by request in post Edited by - maclover5 on 05 Mar 2003 00:02:41 |

WILL EVERYONE STOP WITH THE DAMNED SEXUAL REFERENCES TO COMPUTER COMPANIES????I BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE HAS BEEN ASKED NICELY MORE THAN ONCE TO REMOVE ALL OF THESE REFERENCES FROM THEIR POSTS. WE KNOW THESE COMPUTER COMPANIES ARE CRAP, BUT WE DONT NEED TO HAVE DISGUSTING SEXUAL COLLOQUIALISMS PUT ONTO THEM, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHICH ARE INSULTING. thanks. ML5, this is not a personal assult on you, (though I do remember seeing "cum(com)paq" in your last post) but a reminder for those who posted inappropriate sexual slants on computer company names. You have been politely asked on more than one occasion to remove these asides from your posts, and yet they are not gone. I am not trying to be the police here or anything, there are some computer companies I hate, and make up names for, but I choose not to post them here. I am more concerned that some newcomer may read this thread, and be insulted by some of the slants touched on here, and it just kinda bugged me to see stuff like this. I can understand names like Packard Hell, and Hellit Crappard, but that is as far as I would go. as for the topic at hand, I hate Hellit Crappard for anything but LaserJet printers, and plotters no hard feelings, but I thought I'd vent some agression, and anguish. therein lies MY problem, I don't really hate, per se, any of the real big makers.... it's little ones and the ones that only make crap that I hate.... compaq may be proprietary, but the system that I used was good and reliable.... course, this was WAAY OLD and not a home DTOfficial 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide |

hmm... My dell was pretty expandable (PCIwise) it had like 3 ISA 3 PCI and one combo slot in a DESKTOP case.... and I liked the way that dell engineered that motherboard, obviously they used the same one with different risers in different kinds of machines One dell I had was bad though.... never recognize more than 14 MB of RAM.... *(not good for trying to run NT 3.51 server BTW) The small compaq desktop circa 1994 of whichI had was not really all that bad... it's graphics could to 1024 by 768 in 256 colors..... although the CD drive didn't really stay "put" in the huge space... and wasn't flush with the front.... that wasn't all that much of a problem with me...... BTW the reason that dell is never really proprietary is that they have like zero R&D budget.... (one of the many ways that you save with dell I guess) Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide |
