the Performa 5215 that my wife uses just dies at random times after starting up. Squeals some when the power button is pressed, too. Tried replacing the PRAM battery, but didn't help. I suspect the power supply--anybody got one? Or a better explanation?I don't really intend to keep this Road Apple much longer, but it would be nice to keep it running as a spare or for donation. /Mr Lynn The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn’t have a space program. --Larry Niven |

When you say "squeals," where does the sound come from? (problem could be in the HD, mobo, powersupply, or monitor electronics) Also, have you tried the take-it-apart-and-reseat-everything trick?G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent

The squeal seems to come from the speaker, trying to chime; not sure, though. It's brief. Will try the re-seating routine. The mobo pulls out easily. The rest is kinda buried. People are offering to sell me theirs for spare parts, but I don't really want another. Don't even really want this one. /Mr Lynn The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn’t have a space program. --Larry Niven |

take a pencil eraser and use that on the contacts of every card/slide out mobo.failing all that, take everything off but the bare minimum and boot. if it boots, add things one at a time till it doesnt. failing that, give dat sucka a bath!!! Er-- you don't think it could be a failing power supply? The thing will be just merrily chugging along, and suddenly die, as if someone pulled the plug. /Mr Lynn The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn’t have a space program. --Larry Niven |

Maybe. I assume when you say "suddenly die, as if someone pulled the plug", that you mean that everything shuts off at the same time -- monitor, HD, etc. Most power supplies will "click" when they cut out (its the sound made by the little circuitbreaker/thermal switchamagig). Also, I would expect that you would not be able to restart the machine if the power supply where bad until you had physically unplugged and replugged the power cord. The only inaudible shutoff mode, AFAIK, would be from a failure or accidental triggering of the softpower switch (the one engaged by pressing the keyboard power button and disengaged by "Shutdown"). Anybody got a copy of the schematic for this machine's PSU? G4From128k

Maybe your PSU is aging, and because of that is starting to be less tolerant to heat???-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 7

maybe this has been tried and/or sounds stupid, but have you tried a different power cord? i had one that had some broken wiring inside that caused a short.

UPDATE:Changing the *keyboard* seems to help. It was taking several clicks of the soft power key to get the machine going, so I tried a different keyboard, and it started right up and (knock wood) is running fine. Then I tried the suspect keyboard on Number Two Son's Umax C500, and it worked fine. So I'm still puzzled. Could it be some combination of a weak PS and a defective power key? /Mr Lynn The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn’t have a space program. --Larry Niven |

Different levels of resistance across the power switch?I can believe it, though. I have an extended KB II with a dodgy power switch. It seemed to work fine on my IIfx, but won't start my CC at all. <<<john>>>

Just changing the ADB cable orwhich connector is used on a KBD could cause a difference, depending upon kinks or damage.jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

Keyboard causing problem with P5215 has hard-wired cable. Plugged into Number Two Son's Umax C500, it works fine. Voodoo, as far as I can see; but the Performa has been running fine all week.Maybe it just didn't like a keyboard labelled 'SuperMac'. /Mr Lynn The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn’t have a space program. --Larry Niven |

Choosy Performas, choose Apple!I would never suspect a fine working keyboard to be part of the problem with a computer that's worked fine before :-\... Official 68k videographer Official MLA TourGuide |

Nor I, but it seems to be the case. The Performa has been working without a hitch since I changed keyboards. I did find a guy on the LEM Swap List willing to send me a power supply for the price of shipping, so I'll have that as a backup. Of course I want to get rid of this Road Apple as soon as possible, anyway. . . /Mr Lynn The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn’t have a space program. --Larry Niven |
