I was wondering if there is a way for us wonderful MLAers to use appletalk hardware (those funny little phonenet things) for having a nix box (the IIsi or the 7300 for example) and then using other serial macs over serial with either AppleWorks or another program as a terminal... :drools: now I need a huge Quadra to run for my server and have dozens of little Compacts strung off of it....

I know you can run a compact Mac as a terminal for a Mac running UNIX with a straight DIN-8 serial cable. You can also use a Mac as a terminal for a UNIX PC or a Sun/SGI workstation by using a hardware handshaking capable DIN8-DB25 modem cable and a PC DB25 null modem adapter. I don't think that PhoneNet will work at all.

You could, however, put a SCSI ethernet adapter on each of the compact Macs and telnet into the UNIX box from them. Unless I'm mistaken, there is no SSH program that will run on a compact Mac.

what if I had like... ethernet in the macs and telnetted into a "server" with ethernet... possibly with a "hub"

yeah that'd be nice?

Nifty Telnet will work on (IIRC) anything which has TCP/IP set up properly.
It might need Open Transport, though, I've never tried to set it up on a Mac running MacTCP.

hehehe... I should try a telnet thing with the PowerBook! I'd love to see all my other computers with terminal windows and whatnot running programs from the TiBook

they don't call the G4 a supercomputer on a chip for nothing

One thing I forgot - the SE/30 will run A/UX and the X Windowing System, so you could display graphical programs run on the server. Cool!
