(also posting this question in Peripherals and Software)
Is it possible to run NeXTstep 3.3 for Intel on an OrangePC 290 card? If so, is it also possible to run A/UX on the supporting Apple hardware (Centris 650 or Quadra 700) at the same time? Just curious.

Probably not. NeXTSTEP interacts directly with all pieces of PC hardware, so it does not work at all with any PC compatibility cards, AFAIK.

You can run A/UX on the Q700 and the C650, but as for running a *nix on the compatibility card.....you could try compiling a Linux kernel for it . I don't think that would work, though.
Your best bet is to run windows with Cygwin.

My apologies about the multiple forum thing. In response to my question in another forum Clinton wrote:

It's just that I cannot stomache the Idea running windows on that card. I don't actually have the card in my hot little hands yet, but it should be on it's way. If anyone has any suggestions as to what to run on it I'd be happy. I've never compiled a kernel in my life, but the card is a 66mhz 486 (I don't know how much RAM), so mabye there's something Linux/BSD out there to fit it.

I just thought it would be kind of funny in an incestuous way to run A/UX and NeXTstep out of the same box. A guy can dream can't he?

Uhhh....A/UX is not based on NextStep, only OS X is. If that card really is just like a pc, then try Knoppix and see if it will boot Linux.

I dont think he was referring to A/UX being based on NeXTstep, I think he wants to run NeXTStep on the orangePC card, under OSX.

also try www.linuxiso.org for linux distros. download smoothwall, as the ISO is only about 20 some odd megs, and if it does not work, you arent out 2 days downloading.

as for the proccie, see if it'll support a 486DX4 100, as those are considerably faster, and a dime a dozen. IIRC, the OrancePC cards are socketed proccies.

good luck

Thanks for the knoppix suggestion. As soon as I have the card in hand I'll give it a try.

That's not my point. My point is that they are both Apple (related) Unix.

Even if it probably won't work, I still plan to try Nextstep on the card. I've been meaning to find a copy of 3.3 for kicks and grins.

"I think he wants to run NeXTStep on the orangePC card, under OSX."

Perhaps *he* hasn't been entirely clear. *He* had intended to run NeXTstep on the orange PC card under A/UX. It is not yet clear to *him* if A/UX will even run the card. It might, it might not. To the best of *his* knowlege, the card has only been run under OS 8 in a Q700.

One thing is certain though. *He* must stop refering to *himself* in the third person.
