Does anybody live in the UK & use thier 68k macs for internet access?

I use Powergen as my ISP, & have found a decent level of service.

But I am intrigued by the idea of connecting my 68k by ethernet.

I would'nt mind paying a few quid extra for ethernet access.

Anybody want to petition Powergen with me to see if we can get support for ethernet acces from them?

Most of my friends in the UK with cable use blueyonder which seems to be pretty good. I think they pay about 40 UKP a month but that includes TV channels and cheaper phone calls. Most dial up ISPs charge around 10 UKP per month.

If you are not using cable however I see no reason not to use a free ISP like freeserve. I have used them since they started (even though I'm in Aus I keep my account active for email) as do my parents, all you pay for is the call time, which you are paying for with Pagen anyway. Why pay anyone 10 UKP a month when you get service just as good for free?

My parents actually use another deal now with freeserve where they pay about 12 UKP a month but IIRC you don't pay the call charges so it works out even cheaper.

I'm in the UK, and I use 68k macs on the net!

I can use my 540c with its internal 14.4k modem. (I use virgin net as my ISP). Its painfully slow but OK for email.

I've got a 56k Hayes external modem that I use with freePPP on the 540 if I require more speed. I also used to use the modem on my LC475, but that was until I got ADSL installed last month!

We got the BTbroadband/Sky package. Free USB modem (which I've sold) and 512kdown 256up connection. £60 installation, £28 per month, split 2 ways with my mate. And we get £20 knocked off the Sky bill.

I bought an ethernet card for the LC475 (£10), and bought an ADSL router/modem, which has 4 ethernet ports built in (£65)

This very weekend, I set up the LC475 to serve some pages. I'm just doing it for kicks, but so far so good, and I'm learning lots of new interesting stuff!

I have a full 040 on the way, and at some point I'll increase the clock speed, but currently its an 040LC @ 25mhz!

lets keep each other posted on this,

I use Powergen & pay 13.99 a month & can stay on the net all day if I wish.

They also provide a decent level of support & are "older mac friendly"

I believe Telewest are now offering 1 mega bit per second broadband.

I will wait until I get a decent offer (£20 a month) at 1 or 2 MBits p/s.

It is a changing market.

First off, this forum really annoys me if I submit a message and my password is wrong, it tells me to click to go back and edit and when I do it has lost my whole damn post! grrr!!

And for the second time..

Telewest do offer a 1mb service but remember its 1mb down 256k up.
Normal Telewest is 512k down 128k up.

Also the 1mb service is £35 a month. £40 if you aren't a Telewest phone customer. Plus installation/setup. Plus modem. Thats a lot of money.

Methinks you'll be waiting a while for £20pm 1mb access!

Get used to it, happens alla'time, that's why my postcount is so low! Whenever typing a post on forums ANYWHERE, it's a good idea to copy to the clipboard periodically during a long post and to make SURE you do so at least once, just before clicking "post!"

Yes, every time it occurs I try and remember, but always forget.
Also, it would be really good if I could set my own time zone so that the times next to the posts reflect my time zone.

I really like phpBB v2 which offers this feature and doesn't lose your posts either
