Hello

Been lurking for a while, finally decided to join in.

I have developed a disease my wife refers to as M.A.D.(Mac Acquisition Disorder). So far I've liberated 6 68k Macs:

4 LCII's
Quadra 950
Mac IIcx

Total $ spent: about $15 (pretty good, huh?)

Anyway, I've got a question about my 4 LC's, but I'll post that in the LC forum.

I'm sorry, but new recruits are required to surrender any Quadra 950s or 840avs over to me.

Good idea, and it would make a nice article for the site: The kings of 68k duke it out to determine the real champion!

Now if I just had a 950 to do a side-by-side with my 840...

IIfx vs. 840 AV vs. 950. Who will win?

well if we're going with pure processor testing 840av vs 950 (sans pds cache card), the 840av will come out on top. However, if we test pimped out systems it could be a close call

It was kind of a rhetorical question...

i'm ususlly pessimistic about such things, but I once received a 6290CD.............

jt

p.s. I've always been frustrated by the Mac-Whatever articles with (intentionally?) different baselines for the performance graphs so they never quite matched up (mag-mag, article-article within a mag, and never across a proc generation for matched baselines), does anyone have a suggestion for a benchmarking routine that could be handicapped for RAM, OS, COPRO, etc. just the os variations on one box would be an interesting exercise......................to me anyway. =8-}

random observation/opinion: I really miss macuser (light years beyond macworld on technical issues), but if ZD'd culled macworld instead (my much-preferred choice for the ax at the time), there might not have been room in the market for sassy upstart. *sighs* Tradeoffs aren't easy in publications any more than os or hardware........

Nah, I always preferred Macworld, particularly Aus MacWorld. (2nd oldest running Mac mag, after the US version)

I enjoy(ed) many of the features in MacWorld and pretty much have a full collection. Does the Aus pub have better hardware analysis than MacUser had? I just can't bear the servile flatterery (sycophancy) of the editorial staff (at times) in assessments of Apple Products. IMHO of course.

Well, nowadays the Aus version is little more than a reprint of the US version, with our own distributors, stores and prices, of course. In the old days, however, it was a full featured, interesting and informative publication which even ran the Australian MacWorld Expo for a few years.
