Hi,

As some of you know, I am on my way from upgrading my current Powerbook 180c to a Powerbook G3 Series II.

Now that I have decided upon which laptop Im going to buy, the next problem is what software Im going to get for it. I have already decided that I will run MacOS 9.2.1 and now MacOS X. I have a few questions about MacOS 9.2.1, which I will add at the end of this post.

That leaves me witha few various software sections which i am unsure of. They are as follows:

-Office Suite. I know there is Microsoft office, but I dont feel like paying that much money for Office.Mac 2001. What other Mac office suites are out there? What is the MS Office for Mac version before 2001. Do older version of MS Office for Mac have HTML Editors, becuase that would be handy?

-Games. I know that the laptop wont be a gaming machine, but I have decided to get 3 games. I also have decided that I will be getitng Age of Empires and Diablo. What I need is a commercial game (runs off CD) that will fit into the space left by those 2 games. That effectively eliminates Ambrosia games, and I would pefer something that is not an RTS or an RPG. Any ideas?

-Internet Applications. What email client, and web browser should I get? I was thinking about Opera 6 for mac, but I would like to know whether it can do email and newsgroups. If Opera cant do newsgroups, what software would you sugest that can (newsreader only applications are fine)? Im also now that I think about it, would consider Eudora for email, that is if Opera doesnt do that either. One the IM front, Im definately getting MSN and AIM.

Now that is all sorted, my MacOS 9.2.1 question. I have never purchased MacOS from a box and I am wondering what software comes with the install. Is it only MacOS or does other programs (Internet Eplorer for example) get installed from the same disk?

Thanks for your help, you are all helping me getting one step closer to upgrading.

In mac os x you can use open office free and has a lot of features.

Mac OS X comes with IE, Mail, the iApps and a bunch of little apps for doing things around Mac OS X.

Asking which is the best browser is kinda like asking which is the best religion...
I'd say Safari and IE, but there's plenty of others to try.
Most people use the standard Mac OS X "Mail" application for email, and there's plenty of stand-alone newsreader apps on VersionTracker.com.

Re: games, why not an FPS? Quake 3 is quite good (not really for single player, though) and runs acceptably on older machines.

Im really sorry about this, but I seemed to have made a typo.

"I will run MacOS 9.2.1 and now MacOS X" is really meant to be "I will run MacOS 9.2.1 and not MacOS X"

The one place where a minor typo can make a major misunderstanding, has to occur when Im posting, doesnt it. :)

About Quake 3 though. While it is possible that Quake III would run, I am not very fond of its style of gameplay, and since msot gaming will be done single player, Quake 3 would not be ideal. An FPS would be nice though.

Any more sugestions are appreciated.

newsreader: get MT-Newswatcher.
games: why not ambrosia games? and what's wrong woth RTS and RPG (or you dont want another one since you're already getting one of each?) get Oni.
if you want Office, but not 2001, there is 98. under $50 on ebay.
internet Apps: a lot of people dont like MS, but IE 5 and OE 6 work fine for web and email. Entourage is good also (comes with office 2001, i think) and also has PIM features (schedule, calender, etc)

Thanks for your help. I have decided upon getting Micrsoft Office 98 and in turn will use IE and OE that comes bundled with it.

That leaves my game problem. I definately dont want another RPG as I already have one in line (Diablo) and another RTS while not ideal, I would accept if it comes to it. Something involving flight, even in an arcade style would be nice, as would an FPS would be. I appreaciate any sugestions.
