HELP! I'm trying to help a friend get her 540c working with a Stylewriter II. the PB has 12 megs of ram, 500 meg HD, running 7.6.1. The Stylewriter works well with my performa 475, but for some reason, the powerbook says that the printer doesn't respond. The Chooser says:
<[]> No Serial Port
<[]> Printer/Modem Port

The drivers are all there, and I've tried reinstalling them more than once. Checked the extension mgr, and all is jake. I've tried upgrading to 8.1 with no luck either.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great!

Thanx,
Milo

It only has 1 serial port, which doubles as both the "Printer" and the "Modem" serial ports on desktop Macs. Select "Printer/Modem Port"...and try printing first with AppleTalk on, then if that doesn't work, turn AppleTalk off.

yes, it does have a built-in GV powerport mercury modem. After more analysis, Techtool Pro says no serial port... but it seems odd that that would go.

You already tried turning AppleTalk off right?

Then turn the modem off in the control panel and tell the chooser that the printer is on the modem port.

Apple should have put REAL serial ports on their freakin' computers! It's bad enough that we got a MAX. of 1.5 ports per Mac, but putting that lame@$$ AppleTalk hobbled piece of printer port poo into a combo port with the only functional serial comms device on any mac, but even worse on the ones like PB's that didn't even expansion capability to use the multi-C-note hurdler card was just beyond belief!
