What is the best, is there a best place for buying mac memory?

What should I expect to pay to max out an 8200/120?

What is a level 2 cache? This is to say I understand the general concept, but have never physically seen one. is it integrated into the machine? do I just buy memory & plug it in, or do you just buy a card & plug it into your machine?

www.18004memory.com usually has the lowest ram prices, AFAIK. it seems that maxing out the memory on an 8200 (4 128MB DIMMs) would run you about $90 to $100 depending on shipping prices. i dunno about the L2 cache.

You simply cannot get a good price in the UK for the memory used in older PCI power macs. Trust me I spent ages looking for somewhere.

In the end I buoght all my memory from www.macsales.com (actual name is other world computing) They sell 128 MB DIMMs for 25 USD (slightly less if you join their mailing list and use the mailing list specials page) That is about 20 UKP. Expect to pay around 100 UKP on eBay for the equivelant amount or more if you buy from any shop in the UK. Shipping on RAM is not a lot as they send it in a padded envelope. I think you would be able to get by on 128 MB or 256 MB quite happily.

The only downside is I was occasionaly charged VAT on the import although not always and rarely when buying RAM usually only on larger items. See what their postage to the UK is, add on VAT just in case and you will still find it is at least 50% of the cost compared to the UK.

If you want smaller amounts 16 MB DIMMs go for reasonable prices on eBay. If they are asking more than 1 UKP per MB it is cheaper to buy from the states though.

Thanks goth, you say that you went through the search for memory yourself.

I hope you realise how appreciative I am of the information. I think that I have been through this before and that someone(maybe gothicon himself) provided me with the link, but there has been so much to take in that it is easy to forget bits of infromation.

Cheers goth :-)

I think i did mention this before actually. Like I said sign up for the mailing list. They have not sent me any spam and I only get a couple of emails a month at most. You save 2-3 USD on most small items. They would also be a great source of parts for your 840. 32 MB SIMMs were pretty cheap last time I looked.

I have not looked at memory prices in the UK for about a year but, asides from eBay but i doubt they are going down. Last time i set someone up with a 7300 she was looking at 99 UKP (140 USD 'ish) for 32 MB No fricking way!!!

I maxed my 840av out, porbably paid about £40 - £50. Though I paid £27 for 2 32 meg 72 pin simms & £17 for 1 32 meg simm. Lol I just bought & didn't look at the price, cos a machine needs it's capacity filled. I like to have it so.
