Now that I think I have the whole DynDNS thing figured out, I'm seriously thinking of running my own mail, ftp and web servers. No specific reason...I just want to learn how to do it.

Anyhoo, here's the interesting twist: the servers will all be compact macs. What I have at my disposal is a Mystic CC (36/500/7.5.3) and 2 SE/30s (20/80/6.0.8 & 32/250/7.5.3). The CC has a CS II 10Mbit enet card, but the SE/30s have no ethernet .

So, the first order is to secure 2 ethernet cards for the '30s. Heck , could live with one...keep the other '30 as a parts machine.

Second, decide which machines will do what. My first thought is to use the Mystic as the mail server and up the memory in one of the '30s up to 128Mb for the FTP/web server. I'll probably end up getting a larger HD for the latter, but the mail server will be very low volume (pretty much just me and a few friends/relatives), so the 500 Mb drive should be fine. I figure on using either Stalker or Eudora server for the mail.

Third, find (if one exists) or build (if one doesn't) a simple ADB switchbox so that I can control them all from one keyboard/mouse.

Last, again find or build a cabinet to house them all. Something enclosed, soundproof and with a ventilation system (like the cabinets they used to make for high-speed line printers) would be ideal.

Anyone have any additional suggestions/tips/tricks...or, if you know where I can get a dirt-cheap NIC or two for the '30s, let me know.

-Chad

PS: When I pitched this idea to a colleague of mine, he thought I was nuts. He suggested I use something newer, like my PM7300 or beige G3, but I didn't really see the challenge in that. Besides, I like the idea of having all my servers only take up a couple cubic feet .

My Preciouses:

2x SE/30s (16/80 & 32/230)
Classic II (10/70)
Plus w/ HD20 (1/20)
Beige G3 MT (512/4000)
PM 7300/180 (330/4300)

Here's an rough outline of a proposal I've been thinking about floating for a KVM/Serial Switchbox Cable. I think it might work to hack some of these
multiple connection adapters (PDF) to combine with inexpensive DB-25 Data SwitchBoxes to free up some desk space.

The pinout info is from "the hardwarebook" and using these cables, a good quality mechanical rotary switchbox would be very similar to the fairly expensive CompuCable KVM box I'm using right now!

Does anybody see anything wrong with this concept?

that's a cool idea, It is amazing that a small compact mac like the SE/30 can handly up to 128 of RAM, it should make a great server

with either of the predominate mail server for 68k type free packages, the cc should be good at that too

I'm planning on running MacHTTP for the web server...not sure about the FTP server, though. Granted, with the limited power of the SE/30, I'm pretty much limited to static pages, but that's all I really need it for anyway. I mean, my first project is going to be putting by family's recipe book online...not a very intensive website, I assure you.

I'm running some pretty large sites on my Quadra 605 http/ftp server (with a whopping 12 megs RAM), and it does fine. On a cable connection it gets around 50k/second. I used to have a LCIII+ serving, and it worked just as good, but it had some issues with its SCSI. I use MacHTTP for HTTP, and NetPresenz for FTP.

It seems to me that unless you get a lot of mail, the web serving would be a more difficult task, not to mention web and FTP serving from the same mac. How about running those off the mystic and the mail from the SE/30? Plus, it would be just killer to see the page you're serving on the server itself, and the SE's wouldn't be up for that, really. In theory, I suppose they could give it a shot, but it would be so much better on the CC.

Well, my search for a cheap (read: "free or nearly so") ethernet adapter for the SE/30s has come up short. I'm thinking of doing it all from the Mystic: web, FTP and mail. I may give in and use my 7300 for the web server, though. I have a couple of friends who need webspace and also want big-time stability and speed.
