As it seems customary to introduce ourselves upon joining this forum (and the 68kMLA!), here goes.

Currently residing in Toronto, Canada, I'm an independent musician, multimedia/web freelancer and happy mac user.

I have been blessed to have had my father be an early adopter of Apple-branded machines, and being a university teacher, always had apples and macs in the house.

I'm 26 now, so I have pretty much grown up with Macs. First computer was an Apple II, then a IIe, I think we had a Lisa for a week or two, and we got our first Mac.

For the years following, we always had a relatively new mac in the house, and with these early computers I was able to log on the the Ottawa-Carleton Freenet in the late 80s and have my first online experience. All those text files were a godsend! ;)

Cutting to the chase, I'm currently the proud owner-liberator of:

68k
2 Classic IIs
1 IIsi
1 IIci
1 LC II

PPC
1 Powerbook 5300cs (probably going to need some help with this one)

I will share the story of how I came into the possession of these fine machines with only a bit of prodding ;)

My current Mac is a Dual 450 G4, running 10.1, 10.2.3, and 9.2.1 on separate drives.

That's it for now, very happy to be here, and to have found this Forum!

Welcome aboard! You seem to be just fine for the group and will fit right in. (Then again, if you own a mac, how couldn't you? )

Hope we can help with any questions and give some amusement as well!

Thanks for the kind words of welcome!

My current crop of 68k's came into my possession at my former school here in Toronto, Humber College. Apparently they have had the same old Classic IIs and other 68k's handling all the analog film editing, in what's called a "Sundance" suite for the past number of years. This past year, they upgraded to all new G4s with DVD-RAM drives.. what I wouldn't give to have one of those ;)

I spoke to one of the film techs and they told me that all the macs were going out back, but that they still had more to toss.

I came back that night with a friend, 2 skateboards, and a backpack (for all the loose keyboards, cables and mice) and loaded up the skateboards with as much old beige as they would take.

All in all, a decent score, and I was able to crack the At Ease password on all of them. :D

The IIsi is one of the old macs from our family's house. it still has all of my old software on it, Dark Castle, BDC, Crystal Quest, Daily Far Side Comic, etc. and powers the apple colour monitor that was part of the school score. :)

The powerbook? Well, I was planning on using it for text input and stuff, and just to have a working laptop was cool enough for me, but last summer it just stopped powering up. I've tried holding the power management reset button, with no success. Any ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks!

have you tried it on a power adaptor ... or with another batt .... try replacing the PRAM batt ... as that can sometimes help ....

Thanks for the ideas!

Since the Powerbook 5300cs is a PowerPC-based mac, I feel bad talking about it ;)
but thanks for the feedback, after a lot of research, it turns out that the 5300 series is probably the worst laptop (I liked the portable, hehe) that Apple ever made. They extended the Applecare on it to up to 7 years!!
Anyway, I was able to get it working. It's still not all that useable yet, though. I'll let you know when I have 9.1 installed.

Hey, what's goin' on over on this side?

I just finished posting the links to old Mac odds and ends in reply to my 68K liberation story string prodding.

Here I see they're prodding you too. Well at least we put up with the same all-day-long incessancy of pounding hammers, drills, sanders and God knows what else.

There's your wake up call! Better than fresh Folgers invading your nostrils.

Man I'm tired. Good to see you here. Will be around.

9.1? OW! I've used that on a 5300 before, and it is SLOOOOWWWW!!!!!!!!! I wouldn't put more than 8.5.1 on it.

Yeah, 8.1 seems to be the best mix of speed vs. features for that machine.

8.5 runs okay too.
