By this time next week, I hope to have NetBSD running on both of my trusty old Q700s. Does anyone know how well X11 will run on a 700 with 16 megs of RAM (with very little swap space)? What window managers are available? Is the speed bearable? Is it easy to get running (it's impossible to start on my PC, but is the 68k version of xf86config easier to set up because m68k is a very specific platform)? Or should I just not install it at all and save space? (Wow, I just realized how long it's been since I last posted here....hi guys, I'm back!)Wonko The Sane Engineer-in-training 3 Macs Liberated "You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool."- Wonko The Sane |

X11 ain't gonna be fast no matter what you do. But for starters I'd recommend getting more RAM, and using a very resource-efficient window manager (like twm or something). Any "modern" window manager with a full desktop environment will absolutely choke your 700/As for getting X up and running, I've found it pretty easy w/NetBSD--heck of a lot easier than with Debian Linux. Does anyone know what's with color X servers and NetBSD? Last time I tried NetBSD, the window server only did B&W without a new X server.Official 68kMLA Music and NeXT Expert Macs Liberated: SE (2), LC, IIsi, PB 145b, Quadra 700 (2), LC 575, 6100 (2), PB 5300, PowerMac 5400/200, Performa 6400/180 PCs liberated from Windoze: 3 |

NetBSD 1.5.x was only b/w. I've heard--but I haven't tried it myself--that 1.6 provides color X11.Matt No rank Permanent 68k roommates: - "Mystic" Color Classic, full '040, 36/700, OS 8.1 - Q605, full '040, 36/1.2G/enet, 8.1, Debian Woody - Q605 overclocked to 33MHz, full '040, 20/1.2G/enet, 7.6.1, NetBSD |

I wonder if anyone here can port TinyXto NetBSD 68k. I'm sure that would fly on my Quadra. BTW, installation hit a snag-I think I need a new PRAM battery.Wonko The Sane Engineer-in-training 3 Macs Liberated "You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool."- Wonko The Sane |
