I was afraid to put this in the 68k conquests because it's PCI. I got it for $50+$8 shipping from a failed eBay auction where they asked too much and didn't get any bids. In case you didn't know, it's like the best PCI video card for the Mac.

I'd recommed the Proformance 3 based on what I've read about it. It's like the only affordable card that there's no PC version of and so it's specifically designed for the Mac. It's got QuickTime, QuickDraw, GX, and of late OpenGL acceleration. It's based on the nVidia Permedia 3 GPU which I've never heard of being used in a PC either.

The only thing is it's not OS X compatible. In other words, it's not blessed by Steve Jobs, but I'd bet somebody could get it to work.

I'm sorry but if you ask me the VooDoo 5500 is still king of the PCI video cards!

Just like the Proformance getting it to work with X is pretty tough (although i think you can at least use it as a second card in X which you can't do with the ProFormance)

It has 64MB of VRAM, double that of any other Mac PCI video card (unless there are some high end uber expensive ones I haven't heard of)

It has DVI and VGA.

Very simply nothing can touch a VooDoo 5 for UT based games.

Of course it does have 2 major downers.
1, no DVD playback because driver development stopped early.
2, Open GL in pro 3D apps (not games) is unreliable again because driver development stopped.

Of course if you use a wired for DVD card you don't have to worry about the DVD thing.

Flashing a 3DFx card is stupidly easy and the PC ones are easy to get hold of. 3DFx deliberately made Mac and PC reference boards identical. IIRC you actually egt unaccelerated video from a PC card even before you flash it making it even easier as you don't need a PC or have to do it "blind"

Perhaps I only like it so much because i own one, but hey?!
