Hey folks. I have an external 80MB SCSI drive I'd like to use for my Mac Plus's hard drive (call me an impatient young ne'er-do-well but I tire of floppies). Plugging the pukka straight in with a working System 6.08 doesn't work, I just get a black screen on startup. Now, from what I understand, the drive needs to be formatted in a 3:1 read:write ratio so the plus can keep up with it. The only software I have that might fit the bill is an old version of Apple's HDtools or toolkit or whatever it's called, and it doesn't recognise the drive (it's a Quantum one, if I recall correctly) Any other options for software that'll do the jobbie? It has to work under 7.1 on an LC III or 8.1 on a 6400.Cheers, the benighted bass-turd. |

I recall there's some issue with SCSI termination on the mobo of the Plus, since it has no internal HD. Try lowendmac for info on this.As for the 3:1 ratio, I think you need an even older formatting program? ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit 68k Macintosh Liberation Army (now with forums!) 00007 Macs liberated. |

Well, SCSI issues aside, you could try nabbing a copy of FWB's HD Toolkit, and formatting it on the LC, then installing System 7.1. Indeed you do need to format it in a 3:1 ratio though.Brigadier MacScuzzy 68K Macintosh Liberation Army Total 68K Macs liberated:5 |

IIRC, the Mac Plus has no internal termination. Instead, it relies on you to terminate both ends of the SCSI chain externally. Pizzabox LCs RULE!!!!!!! Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 5 |

Yes, that's about the long and the short of it. I'm still a bit hazy on my SCSI knowledge, but according to lowendmac, it's not guaranteed that your SCSI drive will have termination capability. Now, does termination depend entirely on the, um, terminator you plug into the second SCSI bit on the external device, or is there more to it within the device itself? I'm gonna try and dig up another device to stick in the end of the chain. Also, the Disk tools proggie I was using was a very old one. The problem was it wouldn't recognise the drive at all. |

Gee... all you guys look.. familiar. ;)Anyway.. when I recieved a Plus months ago I got a 40MB externl SCSI drive with it. Now I unknowingly reformatted it to use on my other Macs and when I put it back on the Plus it didn't work. Oops! So I actually have the same problem. But I've given up on it. I don't use the Plus that much and when I do it has a floppy in it. ::::..:....:::.::.:..::.:....:....... Please! no more weasels! I'm full... |

Here's what my library revealed:Although the feature is hidden, it is very easy to reformat the drive to a 3:1 interleave. Boot from a disk tools floppy. (System 6.0.8's HD SC setup is on the Utilities 1 disk) Open HD SC setup, choose the correct hard disk and type command-I. This will bring up the dialog to set the correct interleave. Choose 3:1 and you are good to go! I haven't done it in years... Private Entrance 68k Macintosh Liberation Army 68k Macs liberated: 5 |
